Assistant Head of Year (Non-Teaching) job summary

Job Summary:

The Assistant Head of Year (Non-Teaching) plays a key role in supporting the pastoral leadership of students in a specific year group. This role is focused on the administration, organization, and well-being of students, ensuring that they are supported throughout their academic and personal development. The Assistant Head of Year will work closely with the Head of Year, pastoral staff, teachers, and external agencies to create a positive and productive environment for students.

Key Responsibilities:

Pastoral Care & Student Well-being:

1. Assist in the development and implementation of pastoral care systems to support the well-being of students.

2. Monitor the attendance, behaviour, and progress of students, and provide targeted interventions where necessary.

3. Provide support for students facing personal or emotional challenges, ensuring that appropriate referrals and actions are taken.

4. Act as a point of contact for students who require guidance or support outside of the classroom.

Data Management & Reporting:

1. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, behaviour, academic progress, and well-being.

2. Assist with the collection, analysis, and reporting of data to track student outcomes and identify areas for improvement.

3. Support the Head of Year in creating regular reports for senior leadership, parents, and other stakeholders.

Communication & Collaboration:

1. Liaise regularly with parents/carers to provide updates on student progress, behaviour, and well-being.

2. Work closely with teaching staff to ensure that student needs are being met both academically and pastorally.

3. Support the coordination of meetings with external agencies, such as social services, counsellors, and educational psychologists, as required.

Student Engagement & Development:

1. Assist in organizing and leading extracurricular activities, year group events, and enrichment programs.

2. Support the delivery of Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education and other programs designed to support student development.

3. Encourage student leadership opportunities and support initiatives aimed at developing student responsibility and independence.

Behaviour and Discipline:

1. Monitor and support the management of student behaviour across the year group, ensuring adherence to t school’s behaviour policy.

2. Work with the Head of Year and senior staff to implement appropriate disciplinary actions when required, ensuring consistency and fairness.

3. Assist in the implementation of restorative practices and strategies to resolve conflicts and improve student relationships.

Administrative Support:

1. Assist in the organization of year group activities, including trips, events, and assemblies.

2. Support the Head of Year with administrative tasks such as managing schedules, communicating with staff, and ensuring that policies and procedures are followed.

3. Coordinate the distribution of key information to students, staff, and parents.

Person Specification:

Experience: Previous experience in a pastoral, administrative, or student support role within an educational setting is highly desirable.

Skills & Qualities:

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Empathy and the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.

Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple tasks.

Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and child protection protocols.

Qualifications:

A good level of education (e.g., GCSEs or equivalent in English and Mathematics).

A relevant qualification in student support, pastoral care, or a related field would be an advantage.
