Assistant Headteacher - Inclusion Lead/SENDCo job summary

Welcome to Romans Field School, a nurturing Special School dedicated to children aged 5 to 11, with a Secondary Provision for young people aged 11 to 16 with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). Our pupils all have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and represent a diverse range of needs including ASC, Communication and Interaction, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH), and Complex Needs.

Since increasing our Pupil Admission Number to 66, in the Primary Special School in September 2022, and with the exciting expansion of our Secondary ASC provision opened in September 2024 for up to 24 children with the potential for further growth in 2026, our school continues to grow and evolve. As part of the Inclusive Learning Federation alongside Priory Common School and Bradwell Village School, we benefit from shared expertise and collaboration, ensuring every child receives the best possible education.

About the Role

Romans Field School is seeking a dynamic, resilient, dedicated Assistant Head Teacher to join our Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the strategic leadership and management of a thriving Special School, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of our unique provision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deputise for the Deputy Headteacher in their absence, providing strong leadership and continuity.
  • Work collaboratively with the Deputy Headteacher and Head of School to lead and manage the school effectively.

Oversee and lead the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process, ensuring high-quality support for all students.

Act as the Inclusion Lead and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo), driving our inclusive practices.

Support the development of an adaptive curriculum tailored to meet diverse learning needs.

Oversee and implement effective interventions to enhance student outcomes.

Collaborate closely with the behaviour lead to promote a positive learning environment.

Manage day-to-day staffing efficiently to maximise learning and wellbeing

  • Teach within the classroom, demonstrating outstanding practice and modelling high expectations.
  • Undertake line management responsibilities, supporting staff professional development and performance.
  • Contribute actively to whole-school organisation, policies, and ethos development.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with proven teaching experience.
  • Experience in a leadership role within a special school or similar setting.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of curriculum adaptation.
  • Proven experience in managing staff and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong organisational skills and the capacity to lead whole-school initiatives.
  • SENDCo qualification or willingness to undertake.
