Assistant Headteacher job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and aspirational leader to join our Senior Leadership Team as an Assistant Headteacher. The post-holder will play an integral role in the leadership of the school, providing inspirational and highly effective leadership and management of a designated area of the school’s work in order to secure consistently high standards to impact on the experiences, outcomes and life chances of all students. We are keen to hear from experienced, strong leaders who are motivated to make a difference in our school.
As an Assistant Headteacher and key member of the Senior Leadership Team, the post-holder will actively support the vision and values of our School and Trust, demonstrating loyalty, professionalism and high standards of integrity.
This is a fixed term position to commence from 1 September 2025 until 30 April 2027.
Main purpose of the post
The specific daily responsibilities of this role will be decided upon successful appointment but are likely to be either of the following two main areas:
Quality of Education
Curriculum - with responsibility for ensuring a highly effective school curriculum which promotes engagement, learning and pupil progress
Quality of Teaching and Learning - ensuring that pupils experience high quality engaging and inspirational teaching; taking the lead on quality assurance of T&L and securing appropriate CPD
Pastoral
Act as the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) to ensure effective safeguarding of all pupils and to lead the creation of a safeguarding culture where children are safe, feel safe and can thrive
Lead the creation of a calm environment where children learn how to behave and are respectful and instil a culture of high expectations of all pupils, regardless of background - Develop and implement effective behaviour management strategies across the school, including reward and discipline systems evaluating and adjusting where necessary
Secure high levels of attendance and lead programmes to support pupils to attend school
Depending upon relevant experience, act as the school’s SENDCo.
Strategic Leadership and Management
To support the Headteacher with the day-to-day operational needs of the school
Take an active and strategic role in the Senior Leadership Team structure
Contribute to the creation of an annual Academy Development Plan, managing the implementation and impact
Contribute at a high level to policy discussions and decisions in all areas including leadership and management, quality of education, behaviour, staffing and other matters
Model the ethos and vision of the school
To uphold the values of Keyingham Primary School and the Trust and the principles of ethical leadership in all interactions with colleagues, students, and parents
Leading and Managing Staff
Promote the school’s ethos and create and maintain good working relationships among all members of the school community
Maximise the contributions of all staff to improve the quality of personal development and behaviour in the school
Line-manage other post-holders and act as an appraiser in the Appraisal and Support Staff Development Review cycles
Sustain their own motivation and that of staff, and have a duty of care regarding staff welfare
Identify emerging talents, coaching current and aspiring leaders in a climate where excellence is the standard, leading to clear succession planning
Distribute leadership throughout the organisation, forging teams of colleagues who have distinct roles and responsibilities and hold each other to account for their decision making
Shape the current and future quality of the teaching profession through high quality training and sustained professional development for all staff
Efficient and Effective Use of Staff and Resources
Ensure that the school’s systems, organisation, and processes are well considered, efficient and fit for purpose, upholding the principles of transparency, integrity, and probity
Accountability
Take a supporting role, through highly effective evaluation and monitoring of the quality of education, in ensuring consistently high outcomes
Provide information, objective advice, and support to the Local Governing Board to enable it to meet its responsibilities
Ensure that parents and pupils are well informed about curriculum attainment and progress and can understand targets for improvement
Professional Development
Sustain wide, current knowledge and understanding of education and school systems locally, nationally, and global and pursue continuous professional development
Develop effective relationships with fellow professionals and colleagues in other public services to improve academic and social outcomes for all pupils
Inspire and influence others – within and beyond the school – to believe in the fundamental importance of education in young people’s lives and to promote the value of education
