What skills and experience we're looking for
A school leader with a deep commitment to and experience of working with young people with traumatic backgrounds, neurodiversity and severe and enduring mental health needs and who is passionate in their efforts to change the world for these young people, is required to join the forward looking and experienced SLT at Newhaven School. The successful candidate will share our deep belief that all children deserve a better chance and that the development of relationships and responsibilities lie at the heart of everything we do. They will have a passion for people and a desire to keep on developing themselves and others as well as a fundamental belief that equity and diversity is at the core of a successful organisation and society.
We require a school leader who is ready to take on whole school responsibility and has the ability to work with students and staff so they can all secure ambitious academic and personal outcomes from their time at Newhaven. The successful candidate will deputise in either our Newhaven Garden’s Campus or our Newhaven King’s park campus, working closely with the Head of Campus to lead, develop and manage the provision. They will also take on whole school responsibilities appropriate to their skills and experience and how those fit into the wider team.
Newhaven is an exciting, challenging and rewarding place to work. Accredited by Trauma Informed Schools and the Autism Education Trust, we are determined to give our students the best opportunities possible to become successful, responsible citizens with bright futures. Working here is not always easy and staff wellbeing is at the core of what we do with extensive training, daily debriefings and support coming from school leaders as well as clinical psychology and a range of professionals who help us when we are stuck.
Newhaven is a range of provisions including a PRU, a school for children with Autism and severe mental health needs and a provision for children with severe mental health needs, a hospital school at the Queen Elisabeth Hospital and an outreach service working with the hardest to reach young people. If appointed, you would have a small teaching load based on your specialism(s) based at the campus you mainly work in. You would have line management responsibilities at least one subject and other aspects of the school. If appointed, you will receive regular supervision from the school’s clinical psychologist.
We are particularly interested in appointing someone with experience of working with young people with the needs of our students which may have been gained in mainstream or specialist provisions. Your role will be to lead and manage the people, systems and processes that ensure our young people get the best academic education they can by providing the best support possible around their barriers to learning. You will work closely with SLT, heads of academic departments, pastoral leads, the school SENCOs and our multi-disciplinary team as well as other agencies such as Camhs to ensure these best outcomes.
We are looking for:
- A resilient practitioner with the ability to make clear decisions based on a range of evidence.
- A great classroom practitioner with the ability to inspire others and a commitment to high standards.
- A person who understands that relationships are at the core of everything we do and applies this to their work with both students and adults.
- Someone who can Innovate and has an ability to inspire students with a range of needs
- Someone with the desire and ability to learn and who is comfortable seeking support when it is needed.
