Are you a passionate and inspirational leader ready to make a real difference in the lives of children and young people? Do you believe that wellbeing, inclusion and pupil voice are the foundations of a thriving school community? If so, we’d love to hear from you.
At Polden Bower School, we are seeking a dynamic and compassionate Assistant Headteacher to lead our whole-school approach to Personal Development and Wellbeing. This is a unique opportunity to shape and embed a culture that prioritises relationships, resilience and positive emotional development across our school.
Polden Bower is a purpose built special school on the edge of Bridgwater. It also has a small Early years and Key Stage 1 provision in the middle of the town. Polden Bower has 220 children and young people aged between 4 and 19 years. All children and young people have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) in place when they are placed.
The school is part of a Federation with Avalon School in Street and a wider partnership with The Bridge School, a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Bridgwater.
About the Role
As a core member of our Senior Leadership Team, you will work closely with the Head of School and Executive Headteacher to:
- Lead on relational practices, embedding nurture and trauma-informed principles across the school and partnership
- Champion wellbeing for all stakeholders and serve as our Senior Mental Health Lead
- Amplify student voice to drive school improvement and promote active citizenship
- Develop our enrichment offer, including leading the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and anti-bullying strategies
- Oversee the PSHE, RSE and safeguarding curriculum, promoting a whole-school culture of safety and personal growth
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- A skilled and passionate leader with experience in personal development, wellbeing, or inclusion
- Deeply committed to trauma-informed, relational practice and inclusive education
- A confident communicator who builds trust and motivates others
- Creative, proactive and emotionally intelligent, with a strong belief in every pupil’s potential
- Able to inspire, support and challenge staff while modelling outstanding professional conduct
This is a highly rewarding role for someone who is ready to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our school and improving the life chances of our young people.
All Assistant Headteachers hold a whole school responsibility and also lead a specific phase within the school, phases can change annually to ensure that leaders gain a full understanding of the whole school over time. Leading a phase includes the day-to-day organisation along with the middle leader to ensure timetables and staffing are in place. This role also provides a senior leader link for parents and pupils but also ensures they have an oversight of safeguarding, behaviour and attendance for pupils. There will be a teaching commitment to this role of up to 2 days, this will be flexible at any time to meet the needs of the school and can include direct teaching, supporting, modelling and coaching other staff.
Why Join Us?
- A forward-thinking and nurturing school community with a strong relational ethos
- A highly supportive Senior Leadership Team and wider network and partnership
- Opportunities to innovate, grow and shape practice
- Ongoing training and professional development opportunities
