Assistant Headteacher SENCO job summary
The SENCo at Sanders Draper Secondary School plays a pivotal role in ensuring that all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), receive the support and provision they need to thrive and achieve their full potential. As a key member of the school's leadership team, the SENCo will work closely with the head, governors, trust and other stakeholders to develop and implement effective SEND policies, practices, and interventions that are aligned with the school's vision of providing an exceptional educational experience for all.

Strategic Leadership and Management
Provide strategic leadership and vision for SEND provision within the school, ensuring it is embedded across all aspects of school life.
Oversee the assessment, identification, and provision of support for students with special educational needs
Coordinate the development and implementation of effective, evidence-based interventions and strategies to support students
Monitor and evaluate the impact of SEN provision, making adjustments as necessary
Liaise with teachers, parents, and external agencies to ensure a collaborative approach to supporting students
Contribute to the school's ambitious curriculum, ensuring it is accessible and inclusive for all learners
Collaborate with the headteacher, governing body, and other senior leaders to ensure that the school's budget and delegated funding is strategically allocated to secure the most effective SEND provision.
Contribute to the school's development planning, identifying priorities and actions to improve outcomes for pupils with SEND.
Provide guidance and training to teaching staff to enhance their understanding and skills in supporting students with SEN
Promote the importance of SEND provision and the value it brings across the school, working to raise awareness and understanding among staff, pupils, and the wider community.
Identification and Assessment of SEND
Implement an efficient SEND identification process across the school, ensuring that barriers to learning are identified and addressed at the earliest opportunity.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of pupils with SEND, including a SEND Register that reflects core assessment data and early indications of possible SEND.
Work collaboratively with teachers, families, and other professionals to identify and assess the needs of pupils with SEND, drawing on their experiences and knowledge to inform the process.
Analyse a range of data and evidence, including information on behaviour, attendance, and performance, to support accurate identification of SEND.
Provision and Intervention
Ensure that effective interventions are informed by a full understanding of pupils' needs and are well-matched to address barriers to learning.
Monitor the implementation of interventions, including appropriate timing, length, resources, and delivery by trained professionals, to maximise their success.
Facilitate the provision of small group and one-to-one interventions, providing the opportunity to apply effective teaching strategies with a more intense focus on a smaller number of learning goals.
Ensure that targeted academic support is linked to the wider curriculum and pupils' learning in class, complementing and not replacing effective teaching in the classroom.
Oversee the deployment and training of teaching assistants to deliver well-evidenced, structured interventions to individual pupils or small groups.
Collaboration and Communication
Establish and maintain effective communication channels between the school, families, and external agencies and specialists to ensure a coordinated approach to supporting pupils with SEND.
Inform families when making special educational provision for a pupil and agree with them what information is shared if a pupil moves to a new setting.
Work closely with the local authority and other agencies to share and seek accurate information in a timely manner, contributing to wider community SEND initiatives.
Liaise with relevant careers leads to provide meaningful employability and work experience opportunities for pupils with SEND, as appropriate to the school's phase.
Compliance and Accountability
Ensure the school's SEND Information Report and SEND Policy are up-to-date, accessible, and contribute to the Accessibility Plan.
Monitor the implementation of the graduated approach (assess, plan, do, review) to SEND provision and report on its effectiveness to the governing body.
Work with the examination officer and external organisations to ensure appropriate access arrangements are made for pupils with SEND.
Contribute to an accountability framework whereby teachers are responsible and accountable for the progress and development of all pupils, including those with SEND.
