About this Role
Cornelius Vermuyden School is now under the leadership of the South East Essex Academy Trust (SEEAT) and, since April 2024, we have embarked on a significant phase of improvement. We have done a lot of the ‘stabilise and repair’ work that the school needed. Increasingly the focus is shifting to ‘improve and sustain’ and we will need your skills and experience in SEND to help us to do this. You will see from the December monitoring visit that there is work to be done to improve the provision for pupils with SEND. We can be flexible with start dates between April 2025 and September 2025.
The role is not without it's challenges but this is a real opportunity for an experienced SENDCo to make a difference, ensuring that all students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), receive the support and provision they need to thrive and achieve their full potential.
You will work alongside the newly appointed Headteacher (joining in April) as well as Desi McKeown, our highly respected Executive Headteacher (who also oversees The Deanes School) and an experienced, hands-on, and supportive SEEAT team. As a key member of the school's leadership team, the successful candidate will develop and implement effective SEND policies, practices, and interventions that are aligned with the school and Trust's vision of providing an exceptional educational experience for all.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and vision for SEND provision within the school, ensuring it is embedded across all aspects of school life and monitoring the impact.
- Oversee the assessment, identification, and provision of support for students with special educational needs, collaborating with teachers, parents and external agencies
- Coordinate the development and implementation of effective, evidence-based interventions and strategies to support students
- Contribute to the school's ambitious curriculum, ensuring it is accessible and inclusive for all learners
- Work alongside the Headteacher to ensure that the school's budget and delegated funding is strategically allocated to secure the most effective SEND provision.
- Promote the importance of SEND provision and the value it brings across the school, working to raise awareness and understanding among staff, pupils, and the wider community.
- Ensure that targeted academic support is linked to the wider curriculum and pupils' learning in class, complementing and not replacing effective teaching in the classroom.
- Oversee the deployment and training of teaching assistants to deliver well-evidenced, structured interventions to individual pupils or small groups.
- Work closely with the local authority and other agencies to share and seek accurate information in a timely manner, contributing to wider community SEND initiatives.
- Monitor the implementation of the graduated approach (assess, plan, do, review) to SEND provision and report on its effectiveness to the governing body.
- Work with the examination officer and external organisations to ensure appropriate access arrangements are made for pupils with SEND
- Contribute to an accountability framework whereby teachers are responsible and accountable for the progress and development of all pupils, including those with SEND.
