  • The role of the Assistant Head is to play a full part in the Senior Leadership Team. Ensuring in consultation with the Head that a whole school approach to staff development takes place.

    • Assist in the process of SEF and production of the SIP.
    • Ensure that all record keeping procedures are understood and policies adhered to and review annually or when necessary.
    • Make sure that all necessary policies relating to Teaching and Learning are reviewed annually, shared with staff and on the website.
    • Manage and monitor the work of Lead Practitioners.
    • Feedback to staff regularly.
    • Organise necessary training in relation to Teaching and Learning for all staff.
    • Be involved in the organising, running and moderating of the Staff Development calendar.
    • Implementing, embedding and overseeing the development of the Personal Curriculum at St Thomas More
    • To take a lead in SLT in analysing data and to have a whole school vision on maintaining and improving the provision of our children.
    • As part of SLT to understand and act on the current priorities for St Thomas More, leading and responding to them appropriately.
    • To lead pupil progress meetings
    • Report to the head teacher and/or Governors as required (and outside agencies such as Ofsted)
    • Play a full part in the safe planning and organisation of all school activities, functions and events, including an active involvement in the extra-curricular life of the school.
    • Be involved and lead in relevant school assemblies.
    • Provide support to staff in disciplinary matters.
    • Organise and hold Meetings when required with outside agencies if necessary.
    • Contribute to the creation of a supportive ethos and stimulating school environment.
    • Be responsible for the management of induction of new staff and teaching practice students (ECT and SCITT students)

      General

      • Be responsible to the Head and to deputise when it is deemed necessary
      • Be an active member of the SLT to ensure the progress and development of the school
      • Be available for meetings with parents
      • Be an excellent classroom practitioner and model of good practice
      • Be a model of excellence for developing behaviour for learning

      These accountabilities will be delivered though the following strategies:

      • Formulating the aims and objectives of the school in partnership with the Headteacher and other senior leadership team members
      • Working with others to create a shared strategic vision for the school which motivates pupils and staff
      • Establishing the policies through which the school’s aims and objectives shall be achieved
      • Taking the lead in enhancing standards of teaching and learning and value enthusiasm and innovation in others
      • Managing staff and resources to that end
      • Inspiring confidence in teaching and other staff
      • Demonstrating the confidence and ability to make management and organisational decisions and ensure equity, access and entitlement to learning
