Assistant Principal job summary
We are looking to appoint a dynamic and forward-thinking Assistant Principal to lead Personal Development, Wellbeing and Engagement at Joseph Leckie Academy. This is an exceptional opportunity for the right candidate, who will play a leading role in the personal development of our students, including the implementation of the new enrichment entitlement in the “Every Child Achieving and Thriving” white paper. Joseph Leckie Academy is a large vibrant, exciting and innovative 11-18 school. We are proud members of the Forge Brook Trust, a MAT that supports the education of students from 2 to 19 in Walsall. The school routinely achieves positive Progress 8 scores at GCSE and A-Level results in line with National Standards.
Our last Ofsted inspection (February 2026) judged the Academy to be at strong standard in two categories and expected standard in all others. They said that leaders place considerable emphasis on developing their staff. Staff development is carefully planned, well sequenced and aligned with whole‑school priorities, as well as individual needs and that every pupil who walks through the door of Joseph Leckie Academy is treated as an individual with potential. We are a popular Academy and continue to be over-subscribed in all year groups at Key stage 3 and 4, and with healthy numbers in our Sixth form. You will:
- be an outstanding practitioner in your own subject area with a proven record of raising progress and attainment.
- be a successful, highly organised leader with at least four years’ leadership experience, preferably as a Head of Faculty/Subject/Year or other Leadership equivalent in a significant area related to a curriculum/pastoral area.
- be able to lead and promote personal development, wellbeing and engagement across the whole academy.
- have strong knowledge and experience of Personal Development and enrichment and understand the impact these have on the development of young people.
- demonstrate a strong knowledge and experience of working with external and internal providers, developing opportunities to meet the needs of all learners, some of whom may need additional support.
- be able to further develop tracking systems to monitor the take up of enrichment activities across the academy the use of our rewards system (currently Class Charts) for monitoring and improving rewards and opportunities.
- be able to inspire students and get the best from them.
- be positive, enthusiastic, and resilient.
- be an effective team member.
- be ambitious for further career development and enhancement.
- have highly developed interpersonal skills.
- have a high standard of communication skills and excellent ICT skills.
- be able to work effectively with parents and the wider community.
- have experience of delivering staff INSET and leading professional development in relevant areas.
- have experience of coaching, observing teachers and giving feedback to staff.
- have a clear understanding of the importance of safeguarding and equal opportunities.
