Assistant Principal

Salary: L6 to L10 (£56,316 to £62,202)

Responsible to the Deputy Principal, the Assistant Principal will play a pivotal role in continuing The Skipton Academy’s journey.

Prime Objectives of the Post


Provide outstanding effective senior leadership and management which is focused on ensuring every student experiences a high-quality education, enjoys rich and memorable learning experiences, makes excellent progress and achieves the highest possible standards.


Line Management


The Assistant Principal will be line managed by, and directly accountable to, the Deputy Principal.

Strategic leadership to secure educational excellence:

Actively model and promote the values, vision and ethos of the school and Trust

Motivate, engage and work with others to create a shared culture and positive climate where staff and students feel valued and thrive, and wellbeing remains at the core of the school’s work

Demonstrate an unwavering commitment to raising standards

Lead the planning, development and implementation of key areas of the Academy Development Plan (ADP), monitoring and evaluating progress

Support the strategic development of areas of accountability, ensuring strategies are student-centred, have impact and are underpinned by a robust evidence base

Support the Deputy Principal lead whole-school change

Demonstrate and articulate high expectations and contribute to achieving ambitious and challenging whole school targets

Support the Principal in enhancing leadership and building leadership capacity at all levels of the organisation

Build the capacity of staff to deliver and sustain the highest quality of provision and achievement for students across the school and within MLT

Ensure creativity, innovation and use of appropriate technologies to achieve excellence

Monitor, evaluate and review classroom practice and promote improvement strategies

Challenge underperformance and contribute to effective corrective action and follow-up

Ensure the range, quality and use of resources are monitored, evaluated and reviewed to improve the quality of education for all students and provide value for money

Significant contribution to the collaborative work of senior and system leadership:

Lead, with other members of the Leadership Team, relevant policies across the school.

Work collaboratively, share knowledge and understanding, celebrate success and accept responsibility for outcomes

Provide effective organisation and management of the school, suggesting ways of improving organisational structures and functions based on rigorous self-evaluation

Be ready to take on new tasks and responsibilities within the Leadership Team as needs arise

Be informed about educational research and evidenced-based practice and bring this to the Leadership Team for deliberation and discussion

Keep abreast of current local and national educational developments and ensure effective dissemination amongst appropriate colleagues

Advise the Principal and Leadership Team on developments in given areas and on their potential impact on the school

Prepare reports for the Principal, Leadership Team and Governors relating to areas of leadership

Attend meetings of the Local Advisory Board as appropriate

Actively promote Moorlands Learning Trust and be committed to system leadership, taking opportunities to work collaboratively and productively with partners for the benefit of all students within the Trust

Line Management:

Lead, manage and develop middle leaders, teachers and associate staff colleagues as appropriate

Be accountable for the continuing effective work of all staff for whom there is line management responsibility, supporting and challenging them to achieve their potential.

Appraise, train, mentor and coach staff as appropriate

Hold regular formal meetings (at least once per fortnight) and share the record of those meetings with the relevant leader and the Principal

Student conduct and engagement:

Promote equal opportunities and the right of every student to enjoy a high-quality learning experience and opportunities to achieve their potential.

Contribute to the development of a climate for students’ learning and development that is warm and positive, with high expectations and clear boundaries

Contribute as a senior member of staff to the management of student behaviour and attitudes to learning across the school, ensuring that school expectations are consistently understood and applied

Promote good conduct and an adherence to The Skipton Academy expectations

Promote students’ emotional health and wellbeing

Lead whole-school assemblies and Parental Information Evenings as appropriate.

Be highly visible and accessible: reinforcing standards of student and staff behaviour and the school’s core values and ethos (including supervision and duties)

Contribute to ensuring highly effective safeguarding policy and practice

Lead on whole school events as appropriate

Help develop the wider school curriculum to promote the development of the whole child

Support activities that students become involved in, within the curriculum and in enrichment opportunities, and the staff who provide the opportunities for young people

Work closely with key stakeholders within the identified areas of responsibility

Maintain direct contact with external agencies as appropriate

Meet with parents and students as necessary

Work closely with parents and engage them in their child’s progress, making every effort to reach out to parents who do not engage with school

Staff development:

Coordinate and plan the provision for ITT students and ECTs implementing a programme of development to ensure their development and success

Support the Deputy Principal to lead, develop and enhance the teaching practice of others

Train, mentor and coach staff in the development of teaching, leadership and management skills

Contribute to, and help lead, school CPD

Contribute to the development and implementation of effective strategies and procedures for staff induction, professional development and performance review

Build a collaborative learning culture, working with other schools within and beyond the Trust

Developing self and working with others:

Treat people fairly, equitably and with dignity

Promote a commitment to learning and teaching of the highest quality

Ensure effective planning, allocation, and evaluation of team and individual work, ensuring clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities

Acknowledge the responsibilities and celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams

Develop and maintain a culture of high expectations for self and others, taking action when performance is unsatisfactory

Regularly review own practice, set personal targets, and take responsibility for own personal development

Manage own workload and that of others to allow an appropriate work/life balance whilst maintaining integrity, optimism, resilience, sense of proportion and humour!

Be a role model to staff and students demonstrating positive leadership behaviours, confidentiality and discretion and demonstrate a commitment to teamwork and collegiality

Take the initiative and be accountable for own decisions and areas of responsibility

Other school responsibilities:

Comply fully with the school’s health and safety policy

Lead the promotion of the school on social media and other media to enhance the reputation of TSA

Contribute to the planning and organization of Challenge and Celebration week.

Teach outstanding lessons as part of a limited timetable

Any other duties that might reasonably be required of a Assistant Principal

As strategic leaders with significant whole-school responsibilities, Leadership Team members have a contract which goes beyond the 1265 hours working time applicable to teachers.

As with other posts, it may be subject to amendment from time to time after consultation with the post holder and without changing the level of responsibility of the post.
