Crawshaw Academy is a thriving secondary school committed to nurturing ambition, delivering excellence, and enriching children's lives as part of the Red Kite Learning Trust. Our core values of Respect, Integrity, and Determination underpin everything we do, shaping well-rounded, confident, and compassionate individuals. We are dedicated to creating an aspirational educational community where every student is inspired to achieve their personal best and make a meaningful impact in the world.
Our Commitment to Attendance and Achievement:
At Crawshaw Academy, we understand the vital link between consistent attendance and academic success. Our whole school overall attendance is 91%. While our 24/25 attendance was broadly in line with Leeds local authority (91.2%) and above Bradford local authority (89%), we are continuously striving for improvement. We are pleased to report that our current attendance is closer to the national average (91.5%) than in previous years, with a gap of just -0.5%.
We are particularly proud of our younger students, both exceeding the national average, which ensures a positive profile moving forwards. We actively track and support all students to ensure their attendance is optimised and have built strong relationships with our families.
Our Dedicated Attendance Team and Strategies for Success:
Our robust and comprehensive attendance strategy is led by a dedicated team committed to providing universal, targeted, and bespoke support for all students. The team comprises an Attendance Improvement Officer (the role we are currently advertising), an Attendance Support Officer, and a member of the Senior Leadership Team who champions school attendance.
Key interventions and initiatives include:
Rigorous Monitoring: Daily attendance procedures, including PowerBI tracking, register checks, and first-day calling, ensure timely follow-up on absences.
Proactive Support: We offer a range of support at all stages, from our Heads of Year and Safeguarding and Pastoral Team to Early Help Assessments and referrals for multi-agency support. We also conduct home visits when communication is lacking or a student has not been seen.
Clear Expectations: We have a robust policy on not authorising absences for students below 95% unless medical evidence is provided, leading to clear accountability.
Raising the Profile of Attendance: Attendance is a key priority in our Academy Improvement Plan. We conduct whole-staff training, have increased capacity in our attendance team, share weekly attendance in registration, and use assemblies and rewards to highlight its importance. We are excited to announce the development of 'The Bridge,' a new attendance hub opening in September 2025, specifically designed to provide enhanced support for students who find attendance a challenge.
Addressing Persistent Absence: For students with persistent or severe absence concerns, we implement Attendance Panels, Fast Track/SAP processes, and a clear referral structure for enforcement, including Parenting Contracts and Legal Action when necessary. Our Fast Track system is initiated if attendance falls below 95% without good reason.
We expect all pupils to strive for 100% attendance, with a minimum target of 97%. We believe that by working together, our dedicated team, comprehensive strategies, and new attendance hub will ensure every child maximizes their opportunities and achieves their full potential.
