Caretaker job summary

Pebble Brook is a secondary school for approximately 170 pupils aged 11-19 with a range of moderate learning difficulties. We are based the centre of Aylesbury and maintained by Buckinghamshire Local Authority. The team of teachers, support staff and therapists work closely together, making the school a sociable and friendly place to work. Pebble Brook Secondary School takes pride in developing the growth of pupils that have moderate learning difficulties, preparing them for adulthood and finding employment.

We are looking to recruit a reliable, motivated and flexible School Caretaker to join our team. This role is varied and essential to the school, key responsibilities include; maintain security, carry out general caretaking requests and ensure the upkeep of Health and Safety and general presentation of the school

Candidates should be approachable, enthusiastic and positive individuals who enjoy working both independently and with all members of the school community. They can show initiative and prioritise their workload, which can often change due to the school needs and deal with problems or emergencies as they arise. You will work alongside our Maintenance Assistant who supports the school with basic maintenance duties alongside their own job role.

  • Undertake the responsibility of key holder
  • Open and lock up building ensuring that
  • All doors and windows are closed and secured
  • All lights and electrical equipment/heaters are switched off
  • School gates are opened/locked
  • Set school alarms when required
  • Signage and general maintenance on school grounds and playing field
  • Liaising with maintenance contractors to complete essential work.
  • Work through problems and undertake tasks which will often need a hands on approach
  • Replenishing stock supplies around school
  • Complete weekly fire alarm tests
  • Undertake basic maintenance tasks such as to build self-assembly furniture, the hanging of shelves, wall pictures and objects around the school
  • To carry out basic plumbing
  • Operating both hand-held and powered machinery
  • Undertaking minor repairs and maintenance tasks, including decorating and equipment repairs, cleaning toilets and carpets (for ad-hoc accidents during school hours only)
  • To routinely move small deliveries and move larger deliveries e.g. furniture as required
  • To ensure that waste is sorted as necessary and confidential waste stored securely for collection
  • To set up rooms for events, meetings and assembly
  • Follow any other duties when required and finish to deadline
  • Drive school minibus when required (Category-D Coach Licence or willing to gain Category-D Coach Licence)

Health and Safety

  • Legionella temperature testing and flushing
  • Playground safety inspections
  • Fire safety checks - Daily visual checks, weekly checks of fire doors, monthly checks including emergency lighting.
  • Visual tree assessment
  • Asbestos awareness
  • COSHH safety sheets

Training courses and support is provided by Buckinghamshire Councils Health and Safety Team. The role is also well supported by an experienced office team.
