What skills and experience we're looking for

Sacred Heart RC primary School are currently seeking a Caretaker. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Trust at the beginning of a journey of transition, development, and growth within the multi-academy trust.

We are seeking to appoint a conscientious, reliable and self-motivated Caretaker to play a vital role in maintaining our school site and ensuring a safe, secure and welcoming environment for our whole school community.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day running, security and maintenance of the school premises and grounds. This is an important position within the school, requiring someone who takes genuine pride in their work and in the appearance and upkeep of the building and outdoor areas.

The postholder will work a split shift on a rotational basis: 07:00–10:30 and 14:00–18:00 (Monday to Thursday) and 14:00–17:30 (Friday). You will act as a key holder for the premises. Some flexibility will be required to accommodate school events, meetings and holiday cover.

You will be expected to plan and carry out repairs and general maintenance to a high standard, working proactively and on your own initiative. The role includes porterage, minor repairs, routine maintenance, health and safety checks, ordering cleaning supplies and site consumables, and liaising with external contractors to arrange and oversee repairs and statutory servicing.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for using the school’s compliance management system (Impero Compliance / iAM Compliant) to monitor, record and track statutory checks, ensuring the school remains fully compliant with health and safety legislation and safeguarding requirements. Some cleaning duties will also form part of the role. Previous experience in site management, maintenance or building trades would be advantageous but is not essential.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be hardworking, dependable and able to interact positively with children, families, staff and visitors
  • Demonstrate a good working knowledge of Health & Safety procedures and statutory compliance
  • Communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, including contractors and suppliers
  • Prioritise tasks and manage workload efficiently
  • Remain assertive, confident and level-headed when dealing with people at all levels
  • Work flexibly, independently and as part of a team
  • Be organised, methodical and able to meet deadlines
  • Possess good basic IT skills and be confident using compliance systems
  • A willingness to be an active part of school life
  • Be comfortable working in a school environment alongside children
  • Respect and support the Catholic ethos of the school
