Casual Site Welfare and Cleaning Officer job summary

We are seeking a reliable and proactive Casual Site Welfare and Cleaning Officer to support the smooth operation of the school estate. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.

This is a varied hands-on role involving cleaning duties, minor maintenance and repairs, portering support, event set-up, and assisting with health and safety compliance across the school site.

Key ResponsibilitiesCleaning & Site Maintenance
  • Collect and dispose of waste appropriately.

  • Clean toilets, staff areas, and communal spaces.

  • Refill cleaning and hygiene consumables as required.

  • Remove graffiti and carry out litter-picking duties.

  • Ensure external pathways and hard surface areas are kept clean, safe, and weed-free.

  • Grit and salt pathways during adverse winter weather conditions.

Repairs & Improvements
  • Undertake minor repairs and maintenance, including:

    • basic plumbing repairs

    • changing light bulbs

    • unblocking drains

  • Carry out minor decoration work as agreed with the Site and Facilities Manager.

  • Support minor improvement projects such as installing shelves, notice boards, and bookcases.

Event & Portering Support
  • Organise equipment and supplies for school activities and events.

  • Set up and clear down school events as required.

  • Provide portering duties, including furniture moving and internal mail distribution.

  • Take contractors around the school and ensure that they have signed in correctly in reception.

Health & Safety
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the school.

  • Conduct classroom and site cleanliness audits.

  • Assist with risk assessments and compliance checks.

  • Promote and maintain health and safety standards for staff, students, and visitors.

  • Respond promptly to maintenance tickets and follow all school policies and procedures.

Essential Requirements
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Good understanding of health & safety, COSHH, and hygiene procedures.

  • Previous cleaning experience within a school or professional environment.

  • Professional, customer-focused approach.

Desirable
  • First Aid qualification or willingness to undertake training.

  • Experience in basic maintenance or caretaking duties.

  • Full clean driving licence.

The ideal candidate will be dependable, practical, and self-motivated, with a positive attitude and strong attention to detail. You will take pride in maintaining a safe and clean learning environment and be willing to support a wide range of operational tasks across the school site.

Safeguarding
