Chaplain job summary
KEY PURPOSE
The Chaplain plays an essential role in ensuring the Christian foundation of the school. Working alongside senior leaders, the Chaplain leads on collective worship and supports staff to view their work through the lens of the school’s Christian vision ‘While we have time let us do good to all’. (Galatians 6:10). The Chaplain will also provide pastoral support for both students and staff, including 1-2-1 mentoring when appropriate. The Chaplain helps to bring community groups together, working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders and partners locally and more widely within the Church of England network.
The appointee will be line managed by the Senior Leader with responsibility for Worship.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead on the whole school provision of collective worship. This includes:
- Daily collective worship (within tutor groups and as an assembled school community);
- Whole school worship events including the Christmas and Easter services;
- Special services including communion, commemoration services and the Good News for Everyone assembly.
Facilitate group Christian activities and worship. This includes:
- Student Bible clubs;
- Student faith groups;
- Staff prayer;
- Parents prayer;
- Supporting our children from other faiths in worship and celebrations to align with our ‘distinctively Christian but inclusive of all’ ethos.
Provide pastoral support. This includes:
- 1-2-1 pastoral support for staff and students;
- Mentoring;
- Mental health support;
- Facilitating mental health and resilience programmes;
- Supporting with the transition of students from Year 6 to year 7.
Community Network and Outreach. This includes work with:
- The diocese and the DBE;
- Local churches;
- National CofE activities;
- International Cross of Nails School (ICONS) Community;
- Coventry Cathedral.
Communicate the Christian foundation of the school to stakeholders including Year 6 Open Evenings and transition events.
Work alongside senior leaders in preparing the school for SIAMS inspections.
Communicate and embody the Christian vision and values of the School.
Support the delivery of the Church of England Difference Programme.
Work with the Senior Team and Admissions officer on matters of faith based admission and appeals.
Other Duties
Carry out any other duties as directed by the senior leadership team line manager that are within the scope, purpose and spirit of the role.
Provide lunchtime activities for pupils.
Attend regular continuing professional development (CPD) as required by the school, and other optional relevant CPD to develop good practice.
Take steps to ensure personal mental health and wellbeing are protected, seeking further support if appropriate.
Safeguarding and Child Protection
Know what to do if there are concerns about a child.
Take on the responsibility for providing a safe environment and promoting children’s welfare.
Undertake regular safeguarding and child protection training.
Be familiar with ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education, part 1 (KCSIE) and local policies and procedures as directed by the trust/academy.
This position is for 12 hours/week , 39 weeks/year

Harris Church of England Academy is a mixed, non-selective, Church of England secondary academy situated in Rugby, Warwickshire. There are approximately 720 students at the school between the ages of 11-16.
