Further details about the role

The department is well staffed and is one of the largest in the school.

All of the members of the Science Department are qualified science teachers. The Science department is housed in seven modern, purpose built labs with 9 members of staff, supported by four technicians in a spacious well designed prep room. Every lab is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and the school has a ‘bring your own device’ policy that means al students have a laptop or tablet for every lesson.

Practicals are done routinely within the science department and as a result the pupils develop good lab skills and techniques. Pupils work in pairs or threes for the majority of practicals in KS3 and KS4. At A level the students, where possible, work independently so that they are able to develop the more advanced practical skills required to become proficient and show competencies.

The KS3 curriculum aims to stimulate pupils’ interest in the natural world. To build upon every child’s natural curiosity and develop their ability to question how and why natural phenomena exist. Our aim is that every pupil understands the relationship between humans and natural phenomena including in the fields of medicine, technology and environment. We aim to equip every pupil with the skills and knowledge they will require in their everyday lives and future scientific study.

At KS4 pupils study either single sciences or combined science. Pupils studying combined science receive 11 hours teaching in a two week cycle, single sciences receive 15 hours. We follow the AQA GCSE science specification. Every pupil has a log-in to Kerboodle and all its’ resources.

Science A Levels are popular at Yavneh College. Year 12 and 13 students follow the AQA specifications and results are always outstanding.
