Class Teacher job summary

From September 2022 Seven Hills School require a Temporary Class Teacher. We would welcome applications from teachers who are looking for part time working as this could be a job share opportunity. This appointment is temporary in the first instance until August 2023 to meet the current needs of the school.

The school has a large post 16 provision based at The Bridge, which is a site on the Talbot/Newfield campus and is currently being developed in collaboration with Talbot School. The successful applicants may be required to work in either phase 1, phase 2 or phase 3 and on either of our sites. This will be dependent on the skills and experience of the applicant and will be negotiable.

In Phase 1 students spend the majority of their time with their class teacher, based in their own classroom. The emphasis in Phase 1 is on basic skills and in providing a wide variety of educational experiences.

In Phase 2 the emphasis is on gaining suitable accreditation. Students follow a range of formally accredited courses in line with their level of need. The majority of these courses culminate in nationally recognised qualifications e.g. Entry Level Functional Skills qualifications or AQA Unit Awards.

In Phase 3 the emphasis is on gaining independence, broadening experience of the local community and preparation for adulthood and the next steps of students’ education.

You will work as class tutor for pupils with complex physical and learning needs, and be committed to providing rich and challenging learning experiences across the curriculum. All pupils at Seven Hills School have learning difficulties and many have other associated difficulties relating to communication, behaviour, sensory, physical and/or medical disabilities. In common with many other special schools, pupils admitted have increasingly complex needs and some have challenging behaviour.

An ability to establish excellent relationships with students and deliver a wide range of subjects to students with very low level learning is essential. The successful applicant will be expected to teach students with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. There may also be the opportunity for some specialist subject teaching across the school so please specify areas where you could deliver high quality subject teaching in your application.

Ideally the person appointed will have relevant experience/qualifications within SEND and be an enthusiastic, committed and a skilled professional. However, colleagues from both primary and secondary mainstream backgrounds with a willingness to learn will also be considered. An up to date Team Teach qualification or a willingness to train for this will be essential. Applicants should be comfortable working as part of an experienced team of teaching and support staff and specialist professional colleagues.

These posts would suit professionals who are passionate about innovation in teaching and learning especially in the specialist sector. It will require resilient and highly effective teachers who are committed to providing stimulating and engaging learning activities and who are able to use visual support to structure learning and classroom organisation.
