What skills and experience we're looking for

Purpose of the Role

To deliver high-quality teaching and learning across both the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1, ensuring continuity, progression, and positive outcomes for all pupils.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons appropriate to both EYFS and Year 2 pupils
  • Adapt teaching styles to suit play-based learning (EYFS) and more structured learning (KS1)
  • Ensure lessons are inclusive and differentiated to meet a range of needs
  • Promote early reading, writing, and maths skills across both phases
  • Create a stimulating learning environment in both settings

Planning and Curriculum

  • Plan in line with the EYFS framework and KS1 National Curriculum
  • Work collaboratively with EYFS and Year 2 team members to ensure consistency
  • Ensure smooth progression for pupils transitioning from EYFS to KS1

Assessment and Progress

  • Observe, assess, and track pupil progress in both EYFS and Year 2
  • Use assessment data to inform planning and next steps
  • Contribute to reports and parent consultations
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records

Classroom Management and Behaviour

  • Establish clear expectations and routines in both classes
  • Support pupils’ social, emotional, and behavioural development
  • Promote independence and resilience

Safeguarding and Welfare

  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils
  • Follow school policies in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education
  • Ensure a safe, secure, and inclusive learning environment

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with teaching assistants and other staff
  • Liaise effectively with parents/carers across both classes
  • Attend relevant staff meetings and briefings (pro rata as appropriate)
  • Ensure effective handover and communication with job-share partners or class teachers

Professional Responsibilities

  • Engage in ongoing professional development
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school
  • Stay informed about developments in both EYFS and KS1 practice

Person Specification

Essential

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Experience teaching in EYFS and/or Key Stage 1
  • Strong understanding of both EYFS and KS1 curriculum requirements
  • Ability to adapt teaching across different age groups
  • Strong organisational and communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience teaching in both EYFS and Year 2
  • Knowledge of phonics programmes (e.g. Read Write Inc. or similar)
  • Experience of job-share or part-time teaching roles
