Core Responsibilities
The Class Teacher will:
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of all children and young people, in line with statutory guidance and school policies
- Inspire trust, confidence and enthusiasm in pupils, colleagues and families
- Build positive relationships and contribute effectively to team working within the school
- Engage, motivate and challenge pupils to achieve their best
- Demonstrate reflective and analytical thinking to improve teaching and learning
- Take responsibility for improving the quality of pupils’ learning and outcomes
Pupil Progress and Achievement
The Class Teacher will:
- Ensure pupils make consistent and strong progress across all areas of the curriculum
- Secure good outcomes for pupils of all abilities, backgrounds and needs, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils
- Use assessment effectively to:
o identify gaps and misconceptions
o inform planning and teaching
o set clear and ambitious targets
- Track, evaluate and respond to pupil progress using performance and assessment data
- Communicate progress clearly and accurately to pupils, parents and other stakeholders
Professional Practice
The Class Teacher will:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of effective teaching practice and curriculum developments
- Demonstrate secure subject knowledge appropriate to the age range taught
- Plan and deliver well-structured lessons with clear learning objectives
- Use a range of teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs
- Apply effective classroom management strategies to promote positive behaviour for learning
- Create a purposeful, inclusive and well-organised learning environment
- Make effective use of resources, including technology, to enhance learning
- Set appropriate homework and provide opportunities for learning beyond the classroom
- Engage in professional development, apply learning in practice, and evaluate impact
- Share effective practice with colleagues and contribute to collective improvement
Contribution to the School Ethos and Development
The Class Teacher will:
- Contribute positively to the ethos, values and wider life of the school
- Support school improvement priorities and contribute to development planning
- Implement and contribute to the development of school policies and procedures
- Engage fully with the appraisal process to improve professional practice
- Take responsibility for leading or contributing to a subject area, where appropriate, including:
o developing action plans
o monitoring impact
o supporting colleagues
- Promote the school’s values and aspirations in all aspects of their work
Professional Standards
The Class Teacher will operate at all times in accordance with the Teachers’ Standards. They will engage in regular self-evaluation and professional reflection, using feedback to continuously develop their practice. As experience grows, teachers are expected to deepen and extend their knowledge, skills and understanding in line with their role and responsibilities within the school.
