Cover Supervisor job summary

We are seeking a reliable, enthusiastic, and confident Cover Supervisor to join our supportive secondary school team. The successful candidate will supervise whole classes during the short-term absence of teachers, ensuring that students remain on task and engaged in their learning. They will also support with other duties, pupil support and reporting where necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise classes during the absence of teaching staff, ensuring a calm and productive learning environment
  • Deliver pre-prepared lesson materials and instructions provided by teaching staff
  • Manage classroom behaviour in line with the school’s policies
  • Build positive and professional relationships with students to support engagement and wellbeing
  • Provide feedback to teaching staff on student progress and behaviour during lessons
  • Support the wider life of the school, including undertaking duties (e.g. break/lunch supervision)
  • Work collaboratively with teaching and support staff to uphold high standards across the school
  • Participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and training opportunities
  • Safeguard pupils in line with the school safeguarding policy
  • Uphold the school ethos, rules and regulations and application of Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Oversee the distribution, collection and storage of books and other equipment as directed by the teacher.
  • Invigilate examinations to the required standard if needed.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • A genuine interest in education and supporting students’ progress
  • Previous experience working with young people is desirable but not essential
