Harlands Primary School is a converter, stand-alone academy which serves the community on the western side of Haywards Heath. Ofsted in 2017 described the school as “Good.”

We provide a happy and vibrant environment for our children and a friendly, supportive and professional environment for our staff.

Our vision is encapsulated in our mission statement: “Striving for excellence, valuing everyone and our world.”

The children at Harlands enter school with prior attainment which places the majority within national expectations. We have a very small percentage of children on FSM. However, every year there are children with a variety of special needs. Results at the end of KS1 and at KS2 are significantly and consistently above local and national levels. The children are a delight, keen to learn and well behaved. They enjoy coming to school and work hard. Children are confident, articulate and enjoy sharing their views with adults.

Harlands is a popular and over-subscribed school. Parents have high expectations of the school and are highly supportive of their children’s education. They expect to be involved and kept well informed, so a weekly newsletter is sent via ParentMail. The very active PTA raises substantial amounts of money each year and provides an important social focus for both adults and children.

Curriculum

The curriculum at Harlands is creative and rich. Great emphasis is placed on the achievement of high standards and the school has recognised strengths in the Arts and sport. Historically there has been aa wide range of extra-curricular activities and some of the clubs were run by staff, although provision at the moment is seriously curtailed due to coronavirus constraints. Children are taught collaborative skills, encouraged to have healthy lifestyles, have a strong awareness in ecological matters and are given many opportunities to develop personal self-confidence. There is a strong ethos of respect and inclusion.

Harlands is fortunate to be part of a flourishing local network of schools (SALT). Together they provide a support network for staff with collaborative curriculum developments and joint training. The strong professional link between the primary heads and deputies is viewed as a good model.

Our School Team

Harlands has a happy, cohesive and much valued staff. The staffing profile has a good blend of newer entrants and professionals with greater experience. The overall quality of teaching is good. Teachers are enthusiastic, committed and hardworking. They know the children well and are valued by parents. All teachers have a curriculum responsibility. The school usually has students from Brighton University. There is an experienced group of teaching assistants, several of whom have HLTA status and cover PPA time. The administrative staff provide excellent support to leaders, teachers, governors and parents. Performance management is well established for all staff.

Senior Leadership Team and Governing Body

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) currently includes the Head, the Acting Co Deputy Head Teachers, and the Finance and Office Managers. Middle managers with TLR responsibilities join meetings as appropriate. Governors are supportive, hardworking and knowledgeable. They work closely with the school and understand their strategic role well. Most governors are parents (or grandparents) of current or previous pupils of the school.

History

Harlands was opened in 1964. Classrooms are south facing overlooking playing fields and woodland. A building project completed in 2008 improved the school’s facilities providing the addition of two new classrooms, a computer suite and library.

The school grounds are an asset. As well as its own large playing field surrounded by planting with mature trees, Harlands shares the use of a sports field belonging to Haywards Heath College. The land backs on to open spaces stretching for several miles. The school makes excellent use of the woodland to provide a special “Forest School” experience for small groups.

We hope you will consider whether you would like to join us to lead the school into the future.
