School Grade: Leadership 11-14

Responsible to: Head of School

Purpose of Job

To assist and support the Head of School in providing vision and leadership for the life and work of the school and Trust, so that their aims are implemented in accordance with the policies of the Trust Board.

Supervisory responsibility:

The post holder will be responsible for the appraisal of a team of teaching staff. Undertake specific managerial responsibilities for non-teaching staff.

Duties and responsibilities

All teachers are required to carry out the duties of a schoolteacher as set out in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document. Teachers should also have due regard to the Teacher Standards. Teachers’ performance will be assessed against the teacher standards as part of the appraisal process as relevant to their role in the academy.

Strategic direction and development of the school

  • Support the vision, ethos and policies of the school and Trust, promoting high levels of achievement.
  • Coach, mentor and motivate staff throughout all stages of their career to build a culture of high commitment, standards and drive for success.
  • Support the creation and implementation of the school development plan within the national and local context, and to take responsibility for appropriately delegated aspects of it.
  • Support all staff in achieving the priorities and targets which the school and Trust sets for itself, and to provide them with support and guidance in implementing schemes of work.
  • Support the evaluation of the effectiveness of the Trust's policies and developments. Provide information and advice to the Head of School and Local Board to support proper accountability processes throughout the school.
  • Support the Head of School and CEO in developing Trust wide initiatives and partnership working.

Learning and Teaching

  • Develop a classroom environment and teaching practice which secures effective learning and teaching, classroom organisation and high standards of achievements, behaviour and discipline.
  • Take responsibility for the development and monitoring of a curriculum area(s) or whole school aspects as agreed.
  • Support the Head of School in developing links with parents, other schools, educational institutions and the wider community, including business and industry, in order to enhance teaching and learning and children's personal development.
  • Support the Head of School in developing positive working relationships with and between all staff and provide sustainable motivation.
  • Support the Head of School in the monitoring and evaluation of the standards and quality of learning and teaching and children's achievement including the analysis of performance data.

School Ethos and Priorities

  • Ensure that parents are well informed about the school curriculum, its targets, children's attainment and their part in the process of improvement.
  • Support the Head of School in the administration of the school's performance management policy.
  • Support the Head of School in the management and organisation of relevant groupings of children to ensure effective teaching and learning takes place and that children's personal development are met.
  • Work with the Head of School and Local Board in establishing priorities for expenditure and monitoring the effectiveness of spending and usage of resources with a view to achieving value for money.
  • Take responsibility for specific resources related to the organisation of the school.
  • Support the Head of School in the appointment, deployment and development of staff to make most effective use of their skills, expertise and experience and to ensure that all staff have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

Other responsibilities

  • Use performance data to track and evaluate pupils' progress and set appropriate targets for improvement.
  • Use assessment to inform planning and teaching.
  • Take on specific tasks related to the day-to-day administration and organisation of the school as agreed with the Head of School.
  • If the Head of School is absent from the school the Deputy Head of School will undertake the Head of School’s professional duties.
  • To be a Designated Safeguarding Lead within Hetton Lyons Primary School and report all concerns in line with Trust procedures.
  • To participate actively in supporting the principles and practice of equality of opportunity as laid down in the Trust's Equal Opportunities Policy.
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions and to comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate.
  • As a term of your employment, you may be required to undertake such other duties and/or times of work as may reasonably be required of you, commensurate with your grade or general level of responsibility within the organisation.
  • To contribute to, support and promote the philosophy of Balmoral Learning Trust as it seeks to deliver its excellence agenda for its pupils, staff and stakeholders.
  • Act in compliance with data protection principles in respecting the privacy of personal information held by the academy and Trust.
  • Comply with the principles of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in relation to the management of school records and information.

Health and Safety

It is the responsibility of individual employees to take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts at work. This includes cooperating with the Trust and colleagues in complying with health and safety obligations to maintain a safe environment and particularly by reporting promptly and defects, risks or potential hazards. Specifically:

  • To report any incidents/accidents and near misses to your line manager.
  • To ensure own safety and safety of all others who may be affected by the Trust’s business

Safeguarding

The Trust has a Child Safeguarding Policy and Procedure in place and are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its students, each student’s welfare is of paramount importance and you are expected to share this commitment. All staff will fully comply with the Trust’s policies and procedures, attend appropriate training, inform the Designated Person of any concerns and record any potential safeguarding incidents appropriately. In addition, the post holder will be required to undertake other reasonable duties within the level of the post as requested.
