What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking an experienced, dynamic, and inspirational Deputy Headteacher to join our senior leadership team. This role is central to shaping the strategic direction of the school, leading high-quality teaching and learning, and ensuring the continued development of an inclusive and ambitious curriculum.

You will play a key role in:

  • Leading whole-school initiatives and supporting the Headteacher in the strategic development of the school
  • Overseeing EYFS provision, ensuring a high-quality, nurturing, and ambitious start for our youngest learners
  • Promoting high standards in teaching, learning, assessment, and pupil outcomes across all key stages
  • Leading and embedding safeguarding practices, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all pupils and staff
  • Supporting staff development, coaching, and mentoring colleagues to reach their full potential
  • Maintaining Clapgate’s culture of care, compassion, and high expectations for every child
  • Fostering strong relationships with families and the wider community

This role is ideal for a proactive and visionary leader who is passionate about making a difference to the lives of children, inspiring staff, and supporting the continued growth of a vibrant school community.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • An inspiring leader with energy, vision, and enthusiasm
  • Experienced in school leadership, with a proven track record of improving teaching and learning
  • Confident in EYFS leadership and delivering outstanding early years provision
  • Skilled in curriculum design, assessment, and pupil progress monitoring across all key stages
  • Knowledgeable and proactive in safeguarding and child protection, with experience leading whole-school safeguarding practices
  • Experienced in coaching, mentoring, and developing staff to drive school improvement
  • Passionate about inclusion and ensuring all pupils, including those with SEND, reach their potential
  • Able to foster a calm, purposeful, and inclusive school environment with high expectations for behaviour
  • Creative, proactive, and committed to enriching learning through outdoor education and the arts
  • A strong communicator who can engage parents, staff, and the wider community
  • Reflective and responsive, using data and evidence to inform strategic decisions
  • Dedicated to professional development and leading by example

Clapgate Primary is a highly successful and popular school situated in Belle Isle in the south of the city. The school is two form entry. Most children start school with us in our Nursery and remain with us until they are 11.

Clapgate Primary also has close links with other neighbouring schools and is in the JESS cluster. It is also part of the Red Kite Teaching Alliance.

The school occupies a large site with extensive playing fields, playgrounds, an orchard, allotments and school animals.

At Clapgate we place a huge emphasis on pupil achievement and adopt a creative approach to teaching and learning. We are committed to inclusion and equality of opportunity.

Clapgate Primary prides itself on the positive attitude held by all who work at the school. The children are friendly, polite and welcoming. There is very good behaviour throughout the school.

Clapgate is a good school with outstanding pupil personal development and Early Years provision (Ofsted July 2024) and prides itself on the positive attitude held by all the staff.
