Thornhill Academy, part of Consilium Academies, is seeking an exceptional and dedicated Deputy Headteacher to join our leadership team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in the continued development of our thriving school, shaping its future as we embark on the next stage of our improvement journey and prepare for an exciting academy rebuild commencing in November 2025.

About Thornhill Academy

Thornhill Academy is an 11-16 secondary school located near Sunderland City Centre, serving a vibrant and diverse community. With students from 14 different ethnic backgrounds and 35 languages spoken across the school, we take pride in celebrating and embracing diversity. Our recent Ofsted inspection (May 2024) rated us as 'Good,' reflecting the significant progress made in our school improvement journey. We are now looking for a Deputy Headteacher to help drive excellence and ensure the best possible outcomes for our students.

The Role

As Deputy Headteacher, you will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, playing a crucial role in delivering our vision of Excellence and Equity with Integrity. Working closely with the Headteacher, you will:

  • Lead on whole-school improvement initiatives, ensuring high standards of behaviour, attendance, academic progress, and student wellbeing.

  • Shape and implement strategic priorities aligned with our School Development Plan.

  • Support staff development through professional learning and coaching.

  • Embed a culture of high expectations, continuous improvement, and inclusivity.

  • Deputise for the Headteacher and provide leadership in their absence.

What We Are Looking For

  • Have a proven track record of successful leadership, ideally as an Assistant Headteacher or higher.

  • Are committed to raising aspirations and outcomes for all students.

  • Demonstrate strategic vision, excellent communication skills, and the ability to inspire and motivate staff and students.

  • Have experience of whole-school leadership in areas such as behaviour, curriculum, teaching and learning, or pastoral care.

  • Are passionate about fostering a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and high expectations.
