Deputy SENCo job summary

Clarendon Academy is looking for a personable and motivated teacher to join our team as Deputy SENCO and help to ensure the best possible provision for our pupils with special educational needs. This is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate and develop leadership experience in a role which will make a transformational difference to disadvantaged students. A specialism in English/Literacy and/or Maths is desirable for the role, which will require you to deliver small group intervention sessions to pupils developing fundamental skills across these core subjects.

Clarendon Academy is a thriving co-educational, non-denominational secondary school and sixth form, educating young people between the ages of 11 and 18. Located in the bustling town of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, we pride ourselves on being a centre of excellence where young, enthusiastic children enter in Year 7 and leave us at the end of Year 13 as fully rounded young adults. Our staff aim for every lesson, every day, to be exceptional and work tirelessly to ensure students feel that they belong and can achieve their dreams. We are part of the Acorn Education Trust, which provides exciting opportunities to collaborate and improve local education. In June 2023 we retained our ‘Good’ Ofsted rating and were praised for offering a high-quality, well sequenced curriculum with the inspectors commenting that “pupils feel safe and cared for in this welcoming and friendly school.”

The Deputy SENCO role will involve supporting the SENCO with all aspects of SEND provision in our school. From line-managing, assessing and monitoring Year 7 and 8 students accessing our established Reading Hub provision to carrying out EHCP reviews and working in close collaboration with parents, you will help to drive best practice for our SEN pupils and also lead on the tracking and delivery of our EAL provision. You will also be expected to complete safeguarding training and act as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, with particular responsibility for pupils with SEN.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience of and a passion for working with students with SEN and their families;
  • Has a passion for supporting students in improving their Maths and English skills and knowledge;
  • Believes in the transformational power of Reading and has experience of assessments and delivering literacy interventions;
  • Is committed to securing the best possible outcomes for students;
  • Has excellent interpersonal and communication skills and is able to work with a variety of pupils, staff, parents and outside agencies;
  • Enjoys working with young people and can develop good working relationships with them;
  • Is self-motivated, dedicated and consistent;
  • Has the ability to deal with new challenging situations;
  • Has a kind, positive and empathetic attitude;
  • Is a strong team player who can use their own initiative;
  • Has experience in a similar SEN role (advantageous);
  • Understands and is sympathetic to the needs of young people, including their social, emotional and mental wellbeing.

We can offer the successful candidate:

  • Training opportunities;
  • The opportunity to further your career;
  • A caring and dynamic team of colleagues;
  • A workplace that genuinely values staff wellbeing;
  • A commitment to achieving the best for all of our pupils and staff.
