Director of Governance & Compliance job summary
As our new Director of Governance & Compliance, you will work closely with the Trust Board, CEO, CFOO, and Directors to uphold the highest standards of governance and ensure statutory and regulatory compliance across all our schools. This includes overseeing legal and policy compliance, developing robust governance frameworks, leading risk management, and acting as the Trust’s Data Protection Officer and Company Secretary.
You will coordinate governance reviews, deliver training and support for Trustees and Governors, and provide expert guidance on policy, risk, and best practice. You will be central to maintaining the Trust’s Ofsted readiness and legal assurance—building a governance culture rooted in our values of Inclusivity, Collaboration, Respect, Trust and Community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leading Trust-wide governance and compliance strategy and frameworks.
- Supporting and advising the Trust Board, Local Governing Bodies, and committees.
- Managing legal and statutory obligations including Company Law, Charity Law, and DfE guidance.
- Overseeing GDPR, data protection, and the Trust’s statutory policies and audits.
- Coordinating risk management systems and the Strategic Risk Register.
- Providing expert clerking to the Trust Board and acting as Company Secretary.
- Ensuring compliance with Ofsted expectations and sector best practice.
We’re seeking a committed professional who is:
- Experienced in governance, compliance or legal leadership, ideally in the education or charity sector.
- Knowledgeable about statutory frameworks such as the Academy Trust Handbook, Companies Act, GDPR, and Charity Commission guidance.
- An effective communicator and trusted advisor, able to work with senior leaders and Trustees.
- Skilled in policy development, risk analysis, and strategic reporting.
- Self-motivated, highly organised, and capable of working independently across complex priorities.
