Director of History job summary
Cornwall Education Learning Trust delivers the best possible educational experience for all the young people in our care across mid-Cornwall. At the heart of our organisation is the desire to collaborate across our schools. Developing our curriculum offer together is fundamental to achieving our ambitions.
CELT has recently been recognised as the Trust achieving the top Progress-8 score for disadvantaged students across the entire South-West region in 2023. Disadvantaged students are at the centre of our thinking and priorities, at every level of the Trust.
This is an exciting time to join our Trust as we grow and deepen the collaboration between our schools, harnessing the collective expertise and skills of all our staff. CELT is seeking to appoint an exceptional leader to the new Trust-wide role of Director of History, to lead subject development across our five secondary schools. The successful candidate will coordinate and lead the curriculum development work in History, curating curriculum resourcing and assessment. They will have responsibility for leading Trust-wide professional development opportunities for History teachers. They will work with colleagues from our primary schools and FE provision to ensure, that from cradle to career, our students have a highly ambitious and expertly-sequenced curriculum offer.
The successful candidate will have a track record of leading a team to achieve exceptional outcomes in History and developing a precisely planned and highly impactful curriculum.
The role will be split between a 0.5FTE school-based role at Newquay Tretherras, leading the History department and 0.5FTE leading History across our secondary schools. The Director of History will work with our wider Directors of Subject team to drive curriculum, assessment and pedagogy across our schools. They will work in collaboration with the Trust Data Team and School Improvement Team to quality assure the provision in all our schools.
Our five secondary schools are all located a short distance apart, nestled in beautiful mid Cornwall. Each school has a unique identity and strong moral purpose.

Newquay Tretherras is one of the largest schools in Cornwall, with over 1700 young people, including a thriving Sixth Form, set on the beautiful north coast. We are a popular and over-subscribed school at the heart of our community. We are known for being an inclusive school with a caring family ethos. Our judicious curriculum is ambitious and aspirational for all of our children as we believe that a great set of exam results, whatever a child’s starting points, opens doors to exciting futures. Our staff set high standards and we aim to ensure that all our children are inspired in school to become the best that they can be, realise their full potential and achieve remarkable things.
Tretherras students are a pleasure to teach and learn with: they know that their education is important for their life chances and they take full advantage of the incredible range of clubs, experiences and facilities offers to them at Tretherras, both within and beyond the classroom.
We have a large team of specialist staff who are fully committed to our students and to each other. We offer excellent pastoral and professional support for all our staff and our dedicated Learning Team ensures high quality training and career development opportunities for all, whatever the stage of your career. Whether you are a newly qualified or experienced teacher, you will find Tretherras to be a school that will invest in you personally. We offer an extensive and highly supportive programme for teachers in the early stages of their career and there are lots of opportunities to become involved in the wider life of the school. As a member of CELT, we also provide an extensive CPD programme and opportunities to share school improvement expertise with colleagues from across the four secondary schools in the Trust.
