Director of Mathematics job summary

Following the promotion of the current Director of Mathematics, there is a chance for you to join and shape the growing mathematics team in the Secondary phase at the Bobby Moore Academy. The school opened in September 2017, and we will open our Sixth Form in September 2022.

Our department’s vision is that every student is a successful mathematician.  All students will leave the Bobby Moore Academy numerate and able to apply their knowledge in mathematics beyond school.  Students will have an appreciation of the power and beauty of mathematics to complement their academic understanding.

We’re looking for a highly skilled teacher and leader to take up this vital role in our growing team.  The Director of Mathematics will need to lead the team in the next stage of developing our mathematics provision, joining up with our Primary team and planning for our Sixth Form provision so that world-class teaching can support our students in developing both conceptual understanding and fluency. As a department and as a school we place great emphasis on supporting teachers in developing their practice. This is done through mentoring, departmental co-planning and developing awareness of research and best practice.  This has supported us in developing a mastery-based curriculum which also draws on research on memory and retention from cognitive science.

We have a highly qualified team of subject specialists within the department.  A significant element of the role will be to work with new and existing members of the department to support them in further developing their pedagogy to ensure that students achieve the highest possible outcomes.

We place a high value on teacher development and well-being.  In addition to making staff development a cornerstone of our practice, we have a sensible and realistic approach to workload, particularly written feedback and data collection.  We understand the importance of providing students with effective feedback, so we recognise that there are many ways to do this. Consequently, we give departments and staff freedom as to how they provide students with regular and effective feedback.

This is an exciting time to join us and help shape a team that aspires to be the best Mathematics department in the country.
