What skills and experience we're looking for

i. We invite applications for a permanent Director of Music to work at our selective boys’ grammar school. This post offers the opportunity to lead an enthusiastic, supportive, and welcoming department in an outstanding school, with a clear focus on promoting musical excellence and engagement across the school community.

ii. Our Music department is a thriving and integral part of school life. All students study music in Years 7-9, with the subject being optional at GCSE and A Level. The department consists of the Director of Music, a part-time music teacher, and 14 peripatetic music tutors, offering lessons across a wide range of instruments and ensembles.

iii. It is expected that the successful applicant will teach music across all year groups. Beyond the classroom, this is a great opportunity to shape and inspire a thriving musical community. The successful candidate will not only lead the academic curriculum with excellence but also drive an ambitious and inclusive extra-curricular programme, igniting a love of music in students of all abilities. Through dynamic teaching, vibrant ensembles, and memorable performances, they will foster a culture where music is at the heart of school life, empowering students to develop their talent, confidence, and passion for the arts.

iv. The department benefits from two dedicated music classrooms, a recital hall, and several practice rooms where tuition lessons take place.

v. We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic practitioner and leader, passionate about Music, dedicated to teamwork, and eager to cultivate a rich and inspiring musical environment. The successful candidate will strive for excellence in both classroom teaching and extra-curricular provision, continuously seeking ways to enhance their practice and broaden students’ musical experiences.

vi. Music plays a key role in the wider life of the school, with up to a third of students learning a musical instrument at some stage. The department runs a wide variety of ensembles, choirs, and orchestras, catering to all abilities. Regular concerts take place throughout the year. The department also provides music for the biennial musical production in collaboration with King Edward VI Handsworth School.
