Director of Science job summary
We are looking for someone to build on the recent improvements made in science and develop best practice for our keen and highly motivated pupils who have a love of science. The science curriculum and its continued development to be romantic, as well as rigorous, is key to the success of this department. There is a purpose-built, well-equipped suite of labs and teachers all have their own labs, supported by well qualified technicians. There are 3 postholders in the department, a mix of experienced and newer teachers, all with excellent subject knowledge and the department is line managed by a highly experienced Deputy Head. A level Science is popular and approximately 25% of pupils currently follow Triple Science at GCSE. Results have been improving and are now mostly in line with national. This is a school however that has the potential, as in Maths and English, to achieve well above national and achieve the very best progress scores for all learners with gaps continuing to be narrowed for SEND pupils and disadvantaged. These groups currently make excellent progress here across the suite of subjects. There is a huge interest and excitement from pupils around STEM activities and this is a real area for growth, especially encouraging girls to make strides in this area.
The Director of Science in conjunction with Heads of Year, the Senior Leadership Team, SENDCO and the Headteacher are responsible for the general good order and discipline of the school, and in the implementation of the School Development Plan (SDP) and all policies. Heads of Department lead their department in ensuring an ambitious culture of high challenge and low threat, ensuring the best possible learning and leadership of learning within the department and across the school, ensuring safety is a key focus, behaviour and attendance are exemplary and ensuring all pupils have equal opportunities to make maximum progress. Middle Leaders are given permission to lead and you will be supported fully in your ambition to make Wanstead a place where science is tangible and real and accessible to everyone.
