8.00 - 4.00 pm (30 minutes unpaid lunch each day) (early finish 1 day per week to be agreed with Line Manager)

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, committed and organised individual to join us as a DT & Engineering Technician supporting teaching to Advanced Level.

VISION AND PURPOSE:

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The main function of the technician is to work as a member of the D&T team in maintaining the workshops and stores and supporting teaching by preparing the equipment and materials for lessons and assisting pupils as required.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Whilst on the premises, work with teaching and caretaking staff to ensure that the D&T block is not left both open and unattended at any time: also unlock and lock up the internal cupboards in consultation with the Head of Department.
  • The preparation of lesson, year set and class set kits (as appropriate). These are to be taken into the workshop (or classroom/laboratory) at the beginning of the lesson. The boxes which have been collected together by the end of the lesson should be returned to their place of storage. Machines and floors swept/cleared of any debris after practical lessons and to ensure that all tools have been stored away correctly.
  • Be ever-vigilant over the maintenance of high standards of safety in the workshops and ready to assist pupils with their practical work on appropriate occasions as requested by the Head of Department.
  • Design and make moulds and jigs for all D&T and Engineering KS3, KS4 & KS5 projects.
  • Design and makes visual teaching aids for KS3, KS4 & KS5.
  • Maintain and repair equipment for Engineering and D&T, service and maintain Laser cutter, 3D printers, Vinyl cutter and other machinery in the department as required.
  • Undertake activities under the direction of the Head of Department to design and test project prototypes to support the teaching in the department.
  • Under the direction of the Head of Department to design and execute working drawings to support the teaching in the department.
  • Support teaching staff in the workshops during lessons in addition to supporting students with their work.
  • Administration duties relating to extra-curricular clubs and competitions. Organise photocopying, liaising with the reprographics department.

Stock Levels:

  • Be aware of the level of stock throughout the year and inform the Head of Department when stocks are low and need replacing.
  • Under the direction of the Head of Department, order all stock for Design Technology and Engineering.
  • Liaise with suppliers before and after ordering to ensure cost control and efficient delivery.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of suppliers and catalogues (this information will become stored on the computer).

Safety:

  • Maintain hand tools in a serviceable condition, replacing blades and sharpening cutting edges when necessary.
  • Maintain and service all fixed and portable equipment in Design & Technology and Engineering Rooms.
  • Understand clearly the safety checks and maintenance requirement for all the electrical equipment in the department and workshop, undertake and log all testing on this equipment. Check and clean the equipment daily.
  • Understand and implement standard safety practice regarding the usage of electrical equipment.
  • Undertake various ongoing improvements in the storage and teaching facilities in the department and maintain the CDT block in good order.
  • Maintain and keeps records for all the dust extraction units in both D&T and Engineering workshops.
  • Monitor the laser cutter filters and replace as required.
