Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator job summary
The Duke of Edinburgh award is among the most prestigious and widely recognised awards available to young people, with a long history of providing opportunities for learning both in a school setting and outdoors.
At Kings Priory School we have one of the highest rates of DoE participation in the North East, with over 200 participants in 2024 across Gold, Silver and Bronze awards.
Our pupils highly value DoE both as a way to extend their learning and develop valuable skills, but also as for its social and cultural value in fostering resilience, teamwork and a sense of shared purpose and community.
Our expeditions take place in areas of Northumberland and the Lake District and many of our teachers are highly trained and experienced in expeditions in these locations, with a long track record of delivery a positive and transformative Duke of Edinburgh experience.
Recent changes to the Duke of Edinburgh licensing and procedures have given us the opportunity to restructure our model and we are now seeking someone to take on the role of a Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator. This role is therefore suited to someone who is not a full-time teacher, but who has the flexibility to come to our school on specific dates to oversee the work of the DoE team. Their ability to provide oversight of all aspect of the programme make this a role ideally suited to someone who likes to see ‘the bigger picture’ and to take our programme forward in an ambitious way.
We expect that our DoE Programme will continue to expand and so an aspirational leader with foresight to plan for this and recruit new candidates year on year will be essential.
A background in Duke of Edinburgh participation and leadership is most appropriate for candidates in this role, but you might have alternative experience in educational visits, leading camping, hillwalking or outdoor adventurous activities for young people through another programme such as NCS, the Scouts or a similar organisation.
What is essential is a commitment to working with young people and parents, an organised approach to planning events and trips and an ability to make sound judgements around aspects of health and safety in relation to educational visits, especially expeditions that involve overnight stays, highland walking, coasts and camping.
If you have questions about this role and would like to discuss the opportunity informally please email brian.nelis@kps.woodard.co.uk

Kings Priory School is an all-through school providing high quality education to pupils aged 4 to 19. The result of a merger between a thriving independent school and an outstanding community primary school, we are an inclusive, non-fee paying School with excellent teachers, a family environment, motivated pupils and a commitment to educating the whole child, both in and outside of the classroom.

In 2018 98% of pupils achieved a 4+ in English and 93% of pupils achieved a 4+ in mathematics. We are also very proud of the outcomes students achieve in the Sixth Form, where, in 2018, the average grade was a B- and many students went to read their chosen subjects at Russell Group universities.
The School operates across two neighbouring sites in the centre of the attractive coastal village of Tynemouth with short commuting links into Newcastle upon Tyne. Kings Priory School is part of Woodard Academies Trust multi-academy sponsor whose aim is to be a provider of world class education, transforming lives within and across communities.
