EAL Teaching Assistant

Salary range: £23,893 - £25,119 (FTE)

Hours / weeks:

37 hours / week, term time only plus 5 INSET days

Job purpose
  • To support the education of EAL students in order to overcome barriers to learning and to achieve their potential.

  • To contribute to the overall ethos, work and aims of the Academy.

Main responsibilities
  • Helping students to access the content of lessons and to respond to tasks given.

  • Helping to promote the development of the student’s literacy and numeracy skills so that he / she can achieve his / her potential in both.

  • Teaching EAL students in a one-to-one situation or small groups.

  • Assisting with the production of appropriate material for students for whom English is an additional language.

  • Carrying out basic administrative tasks within the department, as appropriate.

  • Assisting with school and home liaison

  • Assisting with an induction programme for new students.

  • Monitoring & developing student’s attention, listening and concentration skills.

  • Monitoring student’s social communication and interaction and to implement actions that will promote positive development in these and integration with his peers.

  • Helping the student to develop his verbal comprehension, extend his expressive language and clarity of speech.

  • Promoting and supporting group work and both structured & unstructured activities that will provide opportunities for the student to develop the above skills & to experience & recognise success.

  • Monitoring and attend to student’s behavioural and emotional needs and to promote his

wellbeing, self-awareness and independence.

  • To be a key worker and named contact for the student(s).

  • To liaise with staff in order to ensure that awareness of their needs remains high profile.

  • Attend INSET sessions and meetings as necessary and appropriate.

  • Computer literate
