The Launceston College Multi Academy Trust aims for young people to become happy, responsible and successful by learning the knowledge, skills and values which are important for society.
We are a large College (1300 students) and work hard to be inclusive for all our students, we have an Area Resource Base, (the Castle Unit), on our site for young people with learning difficulties and our Sixth Form (250 students) has students achieve places at the best universities in the country, including both Oxford and Cambridge.
To ensure that we can meet the needs of all of our students we have a wide range of resources and programmes, these include in addition to the full range of academic courses, a College Construction Unit and Motor Vehicle Unit, (on the local industrial estate), and in September 2011 we opened Dunheved House, our training Hotel on the College site with a commercial quality training kitchen, fine dining facilities, bedroom accommodation, a hair and beauty salon and facilities for providing Higher Education and business support for the local community, these are all based in the superbly restored former Victorian “Headmaster’s House” and boarding accommodation. The Inspired restaurant is open to the public and run by students.
There are lots of opportunities for students to express themselves artistically throughout the school including “Poetry by Heart” an annual College musical production, a samba band, a developing orchestra as well as a strong expressive arts and design technology curriculum. For the past three years we have been a learning partner with the Royal Shakespeare Company – 30 students performed with the RSC in their touring performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2016; we are now an RSC lead associate school.
Students are encouraged to take a role in providing student leadership at the College, to do this they undertake many activities to support their fellow students. We are organised into four houses, Causley, Hepworth, Rescorla and Trevithick and there is a male and female “House Captain” for each house, they are supported by many other student leadership roles and an elected College Council. All students feel part of their House community; our traditional sports day is a very competitive event and students work hard to try to win the termly House cup for their house. The House system is also an important part of our very successful pastoral care work.
