Further details about the role
At KS3, pupils have three one hour lessons every week. They study a range of Language and Literature in preparation for the start of the GCSE course in Year 9. We teach in mixed ability groups. In KS4, all pupils study English language, and English literature. The school follows the AQA GCSE specification, with the classes having four lessons each week in Year 10 and 11. For A level we offer AQA English Literature spec A.
“In English at Yavneh, we want to create real readers, real writers and real critics who understand the power, appreciate the power and can use the power of the written and spoken word.”
The English Department have recently spent much time really focusing on the development and planning of our English curriculum journey- so that it supports our learners in developing lifelong literacy & communication skills, as well as a love of literature. We introduce skills and knowledge in KS3 which we continue to return to and build on through KS4 and KS5.
KS3 English
The curriculum for Yr7 and 8 pupils maps a journey based upon our ‘Big Questions’. Year 7 explores the extent to which writers have the power to make readers think and feel. Year 8 builds upon this and examines where the power resides, helping students develop their own device palette. We aim to create real readers, real writers and real critics who understand, appreciate and can use the power of the written and spoken word.
We see reading as the corner stone of all the learning taking place at Yavneh and we are passionate about creating a culture of ‘reading for pleasure’ within the school. Research shows that regularly reading for pleasure can have a significant impact on both student attainment and on mental health and well being.
GCSE English
This curriculum is taught over three years and follows the AQA specification for both English language and English literature. These are two separate GCSEs. As a result, the pupils study the following:
- Anthology poetry
- Unseen poetry
- 20th century text (play or novel)
- Pre-20th century novel
- Public speaking
- Shakespeare
- Language papers 1 and 2
GCSE English Literature
We follow the AQA specification A for A level English Literature. Presently, the course consists of the following:
- Study of The Great Gatsby to compare with pre-20th century anthology poetry
- Study of Othello
- Study of unseen poetry
- Study of A Street Car Named Desire
- Study of unseen prose
- Study of Handmaid’s Tale to compare with Duffy’s poetry
- Coursework
