What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking an exceptional candidate with the energy, passion and creativity to work as the Exams Officer in our thriving All-Through school. Whilst the role would mainly be in the Secondary phase of the school, overseeing the delivery of GCSE examinations, support for the external Primary assessment is also required. The successful candidate will work on average 22.5 hours a week, mainly during the school term. There will be times of the year (specifically during May and June) where they would be needed in school Monday to Friday to oversee the examination season, with early and later finishes during this time. Time off in lieu would be granted outside of these periods to accommodate this. Outside of the external examination and assessment periods, the remaining working hours could be delivered with a level of flexibility, in discussion with the Senior Leadership Team. Approximately seven days of school holiday working is required to fulfil the role. For approximately 5.5 hours a week, the successful candidate would also provide support to the school’s two SENDCos, helping with compliance paperwork and EHCP applications. This role would be well suited to someone with either school or administrative experience, who is looking to lead a team and deliver a vital part of the school’s provision for our learners.

CFS is a vibrant, collaborative and forward thinking school for 4-16 year olds, where the personal development of our pupils is just as important as the academic curriculum. Our values of ‘nurture, challenge and inspire’ influence everything we do as a school, and genuinely permeate all areas of school life. If you are a strong practitioner who shares our values and ideals, we strongly encourage you to find out more about CFS via a visit to the school or through our school website www.chichesterfreeschool.org.uk.There is something extremely unique and special about working in an All-Through environment; the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work creatively with colleagues from both phases helping to develop a cohesive and truly progressive educational experience for all learners.

CFS follows national pay scales and the starting point within the range listed will be agreed on appointment with the successful candidate.

What the school offers its staff

The School

CFS is now entering its second decade and is fully established in our state-of-the-art facilities on the Carmelite Convent Site in the south of Chichester. Our PAN is 60 in Primary, and 120 in Secondary; in almost all year groups we are oversubscribed with waiting lists. Due to demand, we have additional classes in our current Year 7 and Year 9 cohorts. The School joined Sussex Learning Trust in September 2023 – a move that we personally initiated through the desire to collaborate with a like-minded family of schools. The Trust is currently small and based in Haywards Heath; CFS are well placed to launch a new Western Region of the Trust, which is really exciting.

As a Free School, we are the same as any other academy; we are both held and hold ourselves to the same exacting and rigorous standards as all state-funded schools. We follow the national curriculum, and are proud of our ambitious, inclusive and varied curriculum offer. Our pupils engage with SATs and GCSE assessments. In May 2024 we received a very strong fully graded Ofsted Inspection – we were graded at least a strong Good in all areas and Outstanding in Personal Development. In 24-25 we achieved our highest attainment in both Year 6 SATs and Year 11 GCSEs, with some exceptional achievement in multiple areas. As a school we are now striving for excellence in all areas.

CFS is open to pupils of all abilities. We take part in the West Sussex County Council (WSCC) admissions process. As a school we benefit from longer holidays, specifically at October half term, Christmas and during the summer.

The Admin Team

As Exams Officer you would be a member of our dedicated and highly skilled administrative team, some of whom have been at CFS since it first opened in 2013. You would have a dedicated office space and support from, not only the Admin Team, but also your Senior Leadership colleagues. Specifically, you will be line managed and supported by our Associate Assistant Headteacher, who leads on Data and Assessment in the Secondary phase, and work directly with our two SENDCos for the SEND administration aspect of the role. You will have access to external training and qualifications in order to be compliant in the role. Our outgoing Exams Officer is still a member of the team; he is reducing his hours and focusing on his Sims Manager role going forward. In house support is therefore also available for our new Exams Officer. That said, whilst our exams delivery is in a great place - with exemplary JCQ inspections during the last few GCSE seasons- the new post holder will also have the authority and autonomy to make the role and the processes their own.

As Exams Officer, during the summer term you will also work with and oversee a team of Exam Invigilators. We have experienced members of the team, who support us every year, but there is also the opportunity to recruit and train new and aspiring colleagues.
