What skills and experience we're looking for
We are looking for a resilient, experienced, dynamic and enthusiastic team member, with high quality classroom skills, who relishes the challenge of re-engaging disengaged learners through positive activities and active learning. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to collaborative working are essential, as is an ability to teach a range of subjects in line with the National Curriculum.
Suitable candidates will have experience of working with SEMH children and an enthusiasm and willingness to promote effective, inclusive education for our children. They will be a confident, effective and reflective classroom practitioner who can deliver exciting and challenging lessons.
The post holder will have a proven track record in raising standards and accountability for the performance of a significant cohort of young people. They will have an empathetic approach, a passion for supporting children with SEMH needs and an ability to manage challenging behaviour.
Teaching responsibilities will be based on school need and the skills and experience of the successful candidate. This is a full time post – but for the right candidate we could negotiate hours to suit.
You will:
- Be able to teach and plan within a team
- Have the flexibility to teach and plan non-core subjects
- Have demonstrated ability to scaffold and differentiate learning within small group settings
- Ensure students in your care make good progress
- Be committed to supporting and raising the aspirations of children with SEMH requirements in a small setting
- As a Key Tutor, build positive and productive relationships with students, families and other agencies
- Be a reflective practitioner that understands a therapeutic approach and demonstrates a willingness to embrace the Thrive approach
- Be adaptable and proactive; you must be able to react to the events the day could throw at you!

The Rubicon Centre is a Pupil Referral Unit supporting students who for whatever reason struggle to access mainstream settings.
The Rubicon Centre is a school judged “good” by Ofsted January 2018. The numbers of students we work with can change on a daily basis but on average our numbers are around 30. Students are referred to us from the six secondary schools in the Selby area. Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Selby has one of the highest levels of need within North Yorkshire. Our catchment area is approximately a 20 mile radius of Selby Town. The Rubicon Centre was formed in September 2012 to replace the previous REOTAS provision and we moved into our new building in December 2012 which is a small but well equipped provision to enable small groups of students to make rapid progress.
The Rubicon Centre is a friendly and innovative school situated in the centre of the beautiful County of North Yorkshire, bordering the North York Moors National Park, offering a high quality of life. Selby is a small market town sixteen miles south of York and close to the M1 and M62. The School is only 10 minutes from the A1, making it easily and quickly accessible from York, Leeds and Hull.
The School offers all employees training and support with the chance to develop skills working with students with social, emotional needs. Employees also benefit from NYCC’s Vivup discount Scheme including access to tax free childcare vouchers.
We aspire to develop a real sense of ambition and achievement at the school. Although admission to the school is often based on previous struggles encountered at mainstream schools all our students have a fresh opportunity to change direction and start to achieve. Our school logo “Dream Big, Dare to Succeed” is constantly reinforced through the way we work.
