Rydon Primary School
Post title: Family Support Worker
Working hours 08:45 to 16:30 with 1 hour lunch break (unpaid)
27 hours per week (4 days)
39 weeks per year
Initially 1 year fixed term contract with a view to extend depending on the needs of the school.
Purpose of the Role:
To work closely with children, families, and staff to promote positive family engagement, improve pupil attendance and wellbeing, and provide early intervention and support for families facing challenges. The role will help remove barriers to learning and ensure pupils are supported both at home and in school, with a particular focus on emotional wellbeing and mental health.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Supporting Families
- Build trusting relationships with families and offer non-judgmental advice and practical support.
- Support families to access services such as parenting programmes, housing advice, health services, mental health support, and financial assistance.
- Help parents develop routines, behaviour strategies, and engagement with their child’s learning.
2. Safeguarding and Welfare
- Work under the guidance of the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead to support vulnerable children.
- Attend and contribute to safeguarding meetings (e.g. CIN, CP, TAF).
- Keep accurate, confidential records of concerns, meetings, and actions taken.
3. Attendance and Engagement
- Monitor and support children with low or irregular attendance.
- Work with families to address barriers to attendance and punctuality.
- Promote and support good home-school communication.
4. Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health
- Support children and families with emotional or mental health needs, including anxiety, low mood, and behaviour difficulties.
- Deliver or signpost to appropriate interventions such as wellbeing groups, 1:1 sessions, or external counselling/therapy services.
- Work with external agencies (e.g. CAMHS, school nursing teams, early help mental health services) to ensure joined-up support.
5. Working with School Staff
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams.
- Attend staff meetings, training, and CPD related to family support, safeguarding, and mental health.
- Share relevant information appropriately to ensure a consistent approach.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Experience working with children and families in an educational, health or social care setting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and the ability to handle sensitive issues confidentially.
- Strong record keeping and organisational skills.
- Experience or understanding of supporting children and families with emotional wellbeing or mental health concerns.
- Ability to work independently and manage a varied workload.
Desirable:
- Relevant qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, Children and Young People’s Services).
- Experience of multi-agency working and early help processes.
- Knowledge of local mental health support services for children and families.
