First Aid / Welfare Assistant job summary

JOB PURPOSE:

To be responsible for the promotion of good health, welfare and safeguarding amongst pupils in accordance with trust/school policies and Keeping Children Safe in Education

To administer first-aid to the school community

To support the Attendance Assistant with the day-to-day management of the school’s attendance procedure

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

To promote actively the trust’s/school’s Equal Opportunities Policy and observe the standard of conduct which prevents discrimination taking place

To maintain awareness of and commitment to the trust’s/school’s Equal Opportunity Policies in relation to both employment and service delivery

To comply fully with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 etc, the trust’s/school’s Health and Safety Policy and all locally agreed safe methods of work – to include local procedures for supporting pupils with medical conditions and safely administering medicines at school

To comply fully with the trust’s/school’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and related procedures

At the discretion of the Headteacher, such other activities as many from time to time be agreed consistent with the nature of the job described above

To work with colleagues to achieve service plan objectives and targets

To participate in Employee Development schemes and Performance Management (appraisal) and contribute to the identification of own team development needs

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • To initiate and contribute proactively to all health-related initiatives

To attend to pupils, and staff if taken ill or injured, administering first aid and arranging, on the authorisation of the Headteacher, for the individual to go to hospital, to the doctor or home

Maintenance of the accident book (Medical Tracker) and records as required by legislation and in line with school policy and data protection requirements

Notification of Local Authority and Government health bodies where required

Maintaining stocks of first aid equipment and approved medical supplies in a locked cabinet

  • Administering medication in the event of a pupil requiring supervised treatment, on receipt of written instructions from the child’s parent or guardian
  • Arranging attendance of pupils at clinics etc
  • To advise on health and safety and be a member of the Health and Safety committee, as appropriate
  • To assist in delivery of the PSHE curriculum
  • To develop a programme addressing key public and occupational health issues
  • Arranging inoculations/vaccinations and examinations as required
  • Liaison with other local health/education/welfare organisations
  • Report pupil and school issues in line with the school’s policies for attendance, health and safety, safeguarding/child protection, behaviour management etc
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required
  • Be involved in extra curricular activities, i.e. open days, presentation evenings
  • To be a calm, professional and positive role model for pupils; and take a caring, relational approach to working with them
  • To be available to listen to pupils’ concerns and respond appropriately
  • To liaise as appropriate with other members of the pastoral support team at school; ensuring timely, precise and appropriate information sharing with the First-Aid and Welfare Administrator and others, as appropriate

To play a full part in the trust/school community, to support the trust’s/school’s ethos and to encourage staff and pupils to follow this example

Ability to make a distinctive contribution to the work of a team

Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with school stakeholders, including parents

Show high expectations of all pupils and staff; respect for their social, cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic backgrounds; and commitment to raising educational achievements

You will be based predominantly at Springfield School. However, as you will be appointed to The De Curci Trust, you may be required to work in any of The De Curci Trust’s academies or in any of the schools/academies that the Trust is supporting as reasonably directed by the CEO. The ability to travel independently between DCT academies/schools is therefore essential.
