Post Title General Kitchen Assistant

Post Grade/ Hours: Scale 1b, 8 hrs and 45 mins per week (Mon –Friday). 01/10/2024

Responsible to: Cook in charge and Headteacher

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Set up and clear dining area and service area.

- Serve meals.

- Washing up.

4. C - Clean the kitchen and dining room premises, furniture and equipment as required to ensure standards of hygiene are maintained, e.g. hot cupboards, heated trolleys, drawers, cupboards, walls and floors etc.

- To report to, in the first instance, the person in charge of the kitchen where meals are transported from and subsequently, if necessary, to the Area Catering Manager, any problems that arise from customer dissatisfaction.

- Assembling and presentation of food e.g. salads, bread baskets, biscuits. In addition, portioning of ice cream, yoghurt and fresh fruit.

- Unloading of insulated containers, washing out the containers and re-packing with the clean tins.

- To be available, if required, for emergency feeding and special functions.

- To attend meetings and training sessions when required.

- To work in conjunction with colleagues to complete necessary paperwork, for example, hygiene records.

KNOWLEDGE

To Be: -

- Literate so as to read instructions and to be able to write legibly to complete records.

- Numerate for tasks involving counting, portioning and measuring.

- Completely aware of the importance of personal and food hygiene within the catering industry.

SKILLS

Able To: -

Portion food correctly.

Demonstrate customer care principles.

Work as part of a team.

Use hand/eye co-ordination for appropriate tasks.

Plan own work to get the job done within a limited time allocation.

Communicate effectively with customers and colleagues.

INITIATIVE

Able To: -

A - Apply a common sense approach to aid the provision of a first class service to the customer.

- Be self-motivated for the benefit of the team as a whole.

- Make decisions to organise priorities within own workload and to ensure effective and efficient performance of this post.

- Inform the Cook in Charge of any ideas for improving the service or increasing efficiency.

DEMANDS

Able to meet: -

Deadlines e.g. lunchtime.

The daily physical demands of the job i.e. lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, bending.

Some Examples: -

Lifting hot food from ovens to place on servery counter.

With the assistance of a colleague, wheeling large dining tables into position, setting them out then folding them up after service.

Bending up and down from oven to servery.

Attentiveness levels required for: -

All tasks in a kitchen. If not performed in a safe manner could endanger oneself and others.

Recognising potential unsafe circumstances e.g. spills on floors.

PEOPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

As this post is in the service industry it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure customer satisfaction and safety within their own personal remit. In addition, to cultivate a good working relationship with the Production Kitchen, loyalty is essential.

RESOURCES

R - Responsible for handling light and heavy equipment and furniture reasonably so as to preserve its life.

- To treat surroundings with respect.

- To observe Health and Safety regulations so as to keep oneself and colleagues safe.

- To observe Food Safety Rules in order to prevent contamination of food and to ensure food is safe to eat.
