Generalist Teacher job summary

The Oxfordshire Hospital School is an all through maintained special school with a special responsibility

for preparing the young people we teach for their futures, whatever they may bring and regardless of

the challenges that face them. OHS is a school where time is precious and where every learning

opportunity must count. All teaching at our school is 1:1 or in small groups and is entirely personalised

and pupil-focussed. Pupils are taught in purpose-built classrooms, on hospital wards or in single rooms.

We are looking for a highly committed, positive and skilled generalist secondary teacher who has subject

expertise and experience in either humanities, science or social sciences subjects to join and enhance

our dedicated team of staff. Working in the Highfield and Meadow setting means that teachers need to

deliver a variety of subjects to pupils from KS3 to KS5 so some range of subject expertise is desirable.

This is an exciting professional development opportunity for a secondary specialist teacher who is an

excellent classroom practitioner from either a mainstream or special provision background. The

successful candidate will be passionate about teaching their subject to young people who have medical

needs, especially those with acute mental health needs, and have a desire to reduce educational

disadvantage caused by ill health . Flexibility is important within the school so the ability to teach other

subjects where need arises is essential.

Initially the post will be at our Highfield and Meadow setting, however all our staff are subject to

redeployment across all of our settings according to pupil need.

A full induction programme and appropriate training is available to help the successful candidate settle

into the school team.

Further information about the job

The candidate will be required to undergo a full enhanced DBS check and must be eligible to work in the UK.

As a Hospital School (we are officially designated by DfE as a Special School) our priority is to support every pupil and their family by providing excellent, personalised education during their time with us, and subsequently helping to ensure their successful return to their mainstream or enrolled school when they are well enough. The OHS is a local authority maintained school with staff employed by the OCC under the usual pay and conditions arrangements for schools.
OHS is commissioned by Oxfordshire County Council to meet its duties as set out in Section 19 of the Education Act 1996.
We were recognised as an Outstanding school in July 2017 and more recently in June 2023; we work hard to sustain and improve on this achievement. Our leaders, teachers and support staff aspire for excellence in everything they do and are open and committed to exploring new and innovative ways of delivering our outstanding provision.
