What skills and experience we're looking for
Graduate Teaching Internship
1 Year Fixed Term Contract
For the majority of this role, the postholder will work in role as a Cover Supervisor to provide classroom support for lessons around the school. Where possible we will utilise you for cover in the subject that you intend to pursue to enable you to develop an understanding of the curriculum.
At times when cover is not needed, we will utilise you in other roles to develop your skills in education in preparation for your teacher training:
-Administrative work for departments, which may include classroom displays, exams administration and event planning,
-Supporting individual or small groups of students with SEND,
-Supporting individual or small groups of students within our inclusion unit.
You will also have the opportunity to observe teaching within your chosen subject/phase, to lead an extra-curricular activity and/or to participate in day and residential visits if desired.
This post will be available for a maximum of 1 academic year, with the expectation that the postholder will then progress on to Postgraduate Initial Teacher Training. Support will be provided to assist entry on to a PGCE course, ideally with Nottingham Trent University, with whom we are a Strategic Lead Partner for teacher training. As a result, the postholder will be required to have the qualifications necessary for entry on to a PGCE course:
-A grade 4 or C in Maths and English at GCSE (and Science, for primary PGCE),
-DBS clearance and the right to work/train in the UK, and
-An honours degree with a class of a 2:2 or above.
For a Primary PGCE, any degree subject can be used, but ideally this would have relevance to education or subjects that are taught in the Primary phase.
For a Secondary PGCE, at least 50% of your degree should relate to the subject that you wish to obtain a PGCE in.
In support of your progression to a PGCE course we can offer advice on writing your application and a mock interview if desired.
Key Information: Available Secondary subjects are Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Computing, English, Geography, History, Modern Foreign Languages, Religious Studies, Music, Drama, Art, Design & Technology, PE, Business Studies, Economics and Psychology).
Please note – entry on to a PGCE course will be supported but cannot be guaranteed, as this will be determined by the availability of PGCE places and a successful application to NTU. However, in the past all employees who have undertaken this role have successfully progressed on to a PGCE. At the end of this post, employment will cease when the postholder progresses on to a PGCE and as such funding for PGCE training is not a part of this post – however, national bursary funding is provided for some PGCE courses at variable rates of up to £28,000.
