Job purpose

To develop program(s) of study in Hair & Beauty for;

  • Alternative provision; this would involve a small number of students experiencing a series of practical sessions in Hair and Beauty, designed to give them an insight into the Hair & Beauty industry. There is no expectation for this work to be externally accredited.

  • Extra-curricular; this would be for students who have expressed a strong interest in the Hair & Beauty industry and are happy to study the course after school. (3pm to 5pm.) This work should lead to a set of industry level qualifications at the end of the three year course.

Principal Duties and Accountabilities

To be accountable for:

Alternative Provision:

  • Engaging the students in practical provision

  • Tracking and monitoring the progress of the students and feeding back regularly to them, their parents and the Inclusion Manager

  • The health & Safety of the students during the activities

  • The management of student engagement and behaviour in the sessions

  • To promote Hair & Beauty as an Alternative Provision which would be beneficial to students’ self-esteem and wellbeing.

  • Where appropriate to liaise with external groups such as;

    • Awarding bodies

    • Local Hair & Beauty providers

    • Local colleges

  • To plan and resource the sessions.

Extra-curricular:

  • To deliver high quality Hair and Beauty sessions which will lead to external qualifications

  • To liaise with the appropriate examination board.

  • To promote Hair and Beauty as a potential future career

  • To monitor and track student progress, and feeding back regularly to students, parents and line-manager.

Duties specific to the post:
  • To liaise with pastoral staff and the Inclusion Manager in relation to the needs of the Alternative Provision students.

  • To ensure the extra-curricular students have regular feedback to their parents.

  • To plan and resource the sessions

  • To ensure that the learning environment is safe, tidy and engaging.

Other
  • Support and foster the aims of the Academy.

  • Make themselves familiar with the contents of the Staff Handbook, the Academy’s aims and policies and endeavour to follow these closely.

  • Carry out such duties, including cover for absent colleagues as per the academy policy in line with reduced timetable as are allocated to them by their Head of Faculty or Senior Leaders, punctually and efficiently.

  • Attend staff meetings, parents’ evenings, INSET sessions and similar important functions both in and out of normal Academy hours, and participate in the main Open Day for prospective parents and students.

  • Notify their Head of Faculty and the Assistant Headteacher as early as possible if they are going to be absent from the Academy and set rigorous, appropriate work and follow the Academy’s policy for notifying.

  • Attend relevant in-service training each year, after obtaining the consent of their Head of Faculty and the Deputy Headteacher.

  • Take part in the Academy’s performance management scheme and appraisal.


The duties and responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present. This role will be reviewed annually as part of the performance appraisal process and the post holder is expected to accept any reasonable alterations that may from time to time be necessary.

Qualifications & training

  • To have a teaching or PTLLS qualification or the equivalent

  • To have level 3 NVQ in Hair or Beauty or both. (To be open to more training and development.)

  • Related subject degree from a recognised university

  • Qualified teacher status with a minimum of 1 year’s experience

  • Master’s or equivalent

  • First Aid training

Relevant experience

  • Experience of working with young people in a mentoring or tutorial capacity

  • Experience of working as part of a curriculum team to design and develop resources to support learning

  • Proven record of developing schemes of work and of raising attainment

  • G-Suite

  • Previous experience in a multicultural setting

Knowledge, skills & abilities

  • Knowledge of a range of pedagogic approaches to cater for different learning styles, ensuring all students engage

  • Up-to-date subject knowledge

  • Can stretch the most able GCSE students

  • Understanding of what constitutes effective teaching for learning

  • The capacity to form positive learning-centred relationships with young people from a diverse range of backgrounds

  • Strong organisational skills

  • Inspiring colleagues to deliver the best teaching possible
