Head of Art & DT job summary
The Governors and Headteacher of NGHS invite applications for the post of Head of Art & DT on the retirement of a much-valued colleague. Currently staff from both subjects are managed in separate faculty teams, but this post provides an opportunity to create a new faculty and for staff who are already working closely together to unite in one team. This team seeks an enthusiastic and visionary leader and we hope that you will consider applying for this post.
NGHS is an outstanding (2019) selective girls school. Students in both Art and DT achieve results at GCSE and A-level which are among the highest in the school thanks to the talent that our students have, the professional knowledge and expertise of our staff and the relatively small class sizes.
You may be an experienced Head of Department or looking for your first promoted role. The Art and DT team will comprise an enthusiastic Early Career Teacher who is completing her first year at NGHS, our talented SENDCO who teaches Art and a very experienced DT teacher who currently leads our GCSE and A-level Product Design provision. Our ideal candidate will have a background more in DT than Art, but those with Art and Design backgrounds are also encouraged to apply, provided they can teach Product Design to KS3/KS4. Candidates with a degree in Product Design, Manufacturing, Graphics or Engineering are particularly welcome.
As a relatively small school, our facilities are sufficient; we have a large DT workshop with laptops for students to use for design as well as access to a neighbouring IT suite and Art has one art classroom with a kiln room and a smaller studio for A-level teaching, but there is a desire from the governing body to further invest in both subjects in the coming years. The new postholder will be able to bring her/his ideas and we look forward to hearing them!
We teach AQA GCSE Design Technology and A-level Product Design. In art, we use OCR. This year we have enjoyed providing some KS2 teaching in a local primary school as part of our outreach programme. This may suit the successful candidate or could be undertaken by another member of the team as we wish it to continue. We do not teach Food Technology at NGHS, but do work with Telford College to fulfil this part of the curriculum.
Our students are a delight to work with. They are polite, courteous and work hard. Our staff have a real sense of camaraderie and we have a strong well-being focus, as the application pack attests.
We look forward to receiving your application no later than Monday 16 May. We will interview on Friday 20 May. The interview process will include teaching a lesson and bringing a portfolio of your own work to talk through.
If you have any questions or wish to have a Teams call about the post, please contact the Headteacher, Michael Scott, via headteacher@nghs.org.uk and this can be arranged.
NGHS is committed to Safer Recruitment Practice. A copy of our policy is available for download. An enhanced DBS certificate will be required prior to the commencement of employment. References from your current Headteacher will be verified and police checks required from any countries in which you have lived/worked previously. The School is also committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications irrespective of protected characteristics such as age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, pregnancy etc. NGHS has an ever-increasingly diverse student population with circa 20-25% non white-British student population in the lower years.
Further information about the job
The candidate will be required to undergo a full enhanced DBS check and must be eligible to work in the UK.
Visas cannot be sponsored.
If you're interested in teaching or training to teach in England as an international citizen, we can
help you understand your next steps.
Commitment to safeguarding
The school priorities the well-being, safety and safeguarding of all pupils and staff. More information can be found on our website (Safeguarding & Child Protection policy). We also comply with all aspects of Keeping Children Safe in Education and this includes carrying out Police checks for those who have lived abroad as well as online searches for appointed candidates.
