What skills and experience we're looking for
About the role
You will be joining the DT department at an exciting time of change and this role is essential for the next phase of growth of the DT subjects within Mangotsfield School. Following changes of staff, the department is being restructured from a single head of DT to two heads who will manage two subject areas each, (should you be interested in a different combination of subjects, please contact the headteacher). This change in structure will allow maximum specialist knowledge across all four areas of the DT curriculum and give the opportunity for shared leadership at KS3, with potential growth into KS5 in a couple of years time.
The key stage 3 programme of study is thematic and currently taught over four fifty-five minute periods a fortnight. Following timetabling constraints, this is being reduced to three periods a fortnight delivered as a single and a double. This allows a real opportunity for a new leader to put their stamp on the department and secure a knowledge rich spiral curriculum, readying all students of a variety of KS4 options.
You will be reshaping a department of enthusiastic staff who not only help students achieve great outcomes but to spark students’ interest and engagement. You will lead and develop all aspects of the DT and Engineering units of work at KS3, and the DT and Engineering GCSE at KS4, including the quality of curriculum, teaching and learning and assessment. You will share line management responsibilities with the head of Food and Textiles and ensure the team are empowered to improve and develop their own practice. You will have an up-to-date knowledge of best practice and support others in applying this in their classrooms. You will be responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of student progress and will also contribute to the wider school values and school improvement priorities. This is a popular department which has strength in numbers at GCSE, with six exam groups currently running across KS4 for Engineering Manufacturing (WJEC Level 1-2 Award) and Engineering Design (OCR Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National).
About you
You will uphold our Mangotsfield School values and ensure you are a role model for staff and students. You will be a strategic thinker and a dynamic and innovative leader, who can plan and implement change effectively. You will be personable, supportive and see the value in working collaboratively. You will be able to build effective relationships with peers so that your team can look to you for support and guidance. You will embrace diversity, value intellectual curiosity and understand the importance of evidence-based teaching.

Everything at Mangotsfield School is based around its school
values driven by Headteacher, Hetty Blackmore. Having first
joined the school as a newly qualified teacher when she was
23 years old and returned to lead it later in her career, she is
very proud of the journey the school is on.
Mangotsfield School is proud to serve its community and has
been part of the local community since 1957. They have just
celebrated being rated as a ‘Good’ school by Ofsted (visit
March 2022).
There are wonderful resources and facilities on site, allowing
students to embrace curricular and extra-curricular
challenges from DT, art, dance, drama and a climbing wall to
name a few. There is a lot of open space, which is green and
calm. And this sense of calm is echoed in the school itself.
The school has a proud sporting history and teams have
travelled as far as Wembley to take part in national
competitions. The school is also on a mission to broaden
horizons with many co-curricular trips taking place, such as a
Year 7 trip to Slimbridge Wetlands for art research and a
Year 8 trip to Tyntesfield House to explore gothic horror
within the English curriculum.
