Head of EAL and Teacher of English job summary
Discover what we can offer you, that other schools don't!
Would you like to work nine days but be paid for ten?
From September 2024, we have implemented a 9-day working fortnight for all permanent staff. The premise is simple, you will work nine days but be paid for ten, using the tenth day to ‘reset’, and thus giving you the opportunity to manage your work-life balance more effectively. Your reset day will be in addition to the mandatory allocation of PPA time
Feedback from our current staff is unsurprisingly positive! The thought of coming back after a break is much easier and staff say they feel more relaxed, recharged and ready for whatever the next nine working days bring! Plus they save on travelling time and expense and have a little more flexibility.
Furthermore, we offer significant investment in your professional development and the possibility of onsite accommodation if you need to relocate. You can also expect facilities that are second to none, including an excellent canteen, gym and coffee shop, but above all, you will relish the satisfaction of transforming futures and helping our students overcome obstacles to experience life to the full.
Take your career to the next level
As the only all ability academy in Buckinghamshire, we do whatever it takes to tackle disadvantage and provide an outstanding education to everyone. Our innovative curriculum is as diverse as our student community and is purpose-designed to release the potential of academic high-flyers and those with SEN alike. You can join us as you take your career to the next level.
Explore the opportunity
Are you a skilled, passionate English Teacher who aspires to lead an EAL Department? Do you have the desire to support young people to achieve academic excellence, hone their language skills and develop their character? Do you have an understanding of Second Language Acquisition and resilience in leading others to inspire them with your specialism? .
If so, you could be the innovative and charismatic Head of EAL we are looking for, willing to join a happy and motivated community and take their first steps into Middle Management.
EAL is a successful department, constantly striving to meet the needs of our students, and has a commitment to continuous school improvement. We believe that our Heads of Department have a pivotal role in inspiring and challenging pupils of every ability in every year to raise their academic standards, in promoting their confidence and self-esteem, and in securing year on year improving GCSE and post-16 results.
The role would best suit a practitioner who can offer to teach English and either can speak other languages or has a good understanding of Second Language Acquisition.
This post is focused on improving the outcomes across the whole school for pupils with EAL. Apart from running additional sessions for targeted students, you will liaise across all departments regarding the progress of this group of students, supporting them both academically and pastorally. You will create a nurturing environment in which students can safely learn and practice core language skills and successfully close gaps in learning, enabling them to maximise their progress and for new arrivals, to reintegrate into the main school body.
