Head of Estates & Sustainability job summary

Overview

The Head of Estates & Sustainability will lead on the strategic development of the estates function across the Trust, providing an environment where our colleagues can deliver an excellent teaching and learning experience for our students. You will show a passion for the professional development of colleagues related to your span of control and in accordance with Brooke Weston Trust strategies and objectives.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with a strong background in Estates, Health and Safety and Facilities. You will be joining a rapidly growing core team, and much of this role will involve establishing new processes and driving consistency across the schools in our Trust, ensuring value for money and efficiency. You will develop a holistic, long-term estates strategy integrated with a wider organisational strategy, including strategic property portfolio management.

As one of our respected Heads of Profession, you will work closely with your peers in the Central Teams as well as your key stakeholders across the schools to deliver a collaborative approach to estates, with a focus on sustainability, safety, and compliance.

Purpose of the job

  • Strategic Development of the estates function and the professional development of colleagues related to your span of control and in accordance with Brooke Weston Trust strategies and objectives.
  • Implementation of a sustainable development strategy and continually improving the framework though which the business plans deliver, measures, and communicates our sustainability priorities.
  • Strategic leadership and Head of Profession for Estates including facilities, H&S and Asset Management.
  • Oversight of statutory and regulatory compliance for all aspects of professional area.
  • Continuous improvement in efficiency, effectiveness, and value for money in people, processes and systems

Role objectives

  • develop the professional Estates and related elements of an agreed 3- 5 year Trust strategy and to actively review the plan annually, adjusting and making further recommendations as necessary.
  • Undertaking horizon scanning, ensuring any environmental, statutory, and/or best practice developments in the wider Estates and sustainability sector including education are highlighted and recommendations escalated as appropriate.
  • Oversee delivery of all facilities and asset management services across the Trust with day-to-day operations delivered through schools-based site staff.
  • Undertake ongoing review of Trust freehold and leasehold land & buildings - legal title & tenure, size & suitability, engaging with external legal advisers to ensure the Trust is protected and recommending opportunities for strategic development in the medium and long term as appropriate.
  • Ensure our approach to risk management regarding Estates, Facilities and H&S is robust and integrated within our day-to-day operations and quality assured including across our curriculum.
  • Escalation points of contact for Principals, School Business Leaders, Estates and site staff for professional advice and guidance including relating to external contracts/quality of services or the practices of Trust site personnel.
  • Ensure all small, medium, and large contracts are delivered to cost, time and quality in accordance with the Capital Projects Policy and procurement requirements,with reporting and effective stakeholder management in place.
  • Ensure the Schools Condition Allocation (SCA) budget is tightly managed, regularly scrutinised, and records rigorously maintained to ensure value for money and budgetary information is current including accruals and invoicing.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory and development of relevant BWT policies to generate a true health & safety and risk management culture..
  • To organise and facilitate regular professional development opportunities for Estates and other colleagues as appropriate, building networks and Trust capabilities, creating a clear career structure and approach to CPD in areas of responsibility.
  • To act as project lead on any capital works projects (new build, expansion, modification etc.) on any Trust site, or where appropriate, to oversee the work of a delegated project lead for projects below £250,000.
  • To be the first point of contact for all matters relating to the operation of any PFI Contracts.
  • Provide strategic leadership on sustainability including energy use and renewables.
  • Developing excellent working relationships with direct CORE team, Estates function and other key stakeholders across the Trust up to Executive and board level as appropriate.
  • Presenting at external networks, conferences as well as internal committees and meetings, ensuring both the reputation of Brooke Weston trust is enhanced externally and internally developing the capability and understanding of good management of estates across the Trust

Assessment & Reporting

Provide regular reports on the progress of the 5 year plan and all relevant areas contained within (eg utilities spend) as required.

Provide analysis and recommendations in relation to tenders for relevant Trust contracts.
