What the school offers its staff

An Excellent work environment

Staff and learners at our school are friendly, welcoming and supportive and we pride ourselves on being a community which treats each other with kindness and respect. This means that Harrow High is not only a great place to develop your career, it’s also a great place to spend your days. Read our staff testimonials for more.

Training and Development

At Harrow High, we prioritise the development of all our staff. As a result, we have an excellent track record of career progression which makes this the right place for you to take your career to the next level.

We dedicate our weekly meetings towards continuous professional development, not admin. Our team leaders are experienced and know the value of developing excellent pedagogy across their teams.. Most recently we have been renewing our engagement with materials around best practice Assessment-for-Learning & Questioning strategies drawing upon the work of Rosenshine.

If you want to develop your leadership skills and potential, our CPD package also includes access to a variety of Harrow Collegiate Alliance courses (click here) which range from curriculum subject groups to training for aspiring leaders at all levels. We also work closely with high quality London and National partners and have a number of colleagues undertaking NPQs with providers like Ambition Institute, UCL & the Best Practice Network. For Heads of Department we access termly meetings for subject leads across Harrow.. This has not only been an excellent source of subject improvement for our school but has also allowed us to share our expertise where Departments are outstanding.

We also run our own instructional coaching programme with all members of staff receiving coaching within a three year cycle. These consist of weekly sessions with a dedicated and trained coach assisting with aspects of pedagogy to bring about incremental change in practice.

Finally, we have a great ECT and ITT programme; our mentors are experienced in bringing about the best experience for young teachers entering the profession. We work closely with Teach West London & UCL to meet the Early Careers Framework and partner with neighbouring Harrow Schools to enable networking opportunities for Early Career Teachers.

Managing Workload whilst delivering excellent lessons

Across the curriculum we have a system of excellent centrally planned resources, designed or identified by our staff to meet the specific needs of our learners. The resources ensure stretch and challenge for all learners is all lessons whilst incorporating our whole school priorities. These resources are reviewed and updated by curriculum teams on a regular basis, mostly during gained time in the summer.

This means that as a teacher at Harrow High, your planning time is lower than at other schools. However, we do expect you ensure you know these resources and understand how you are going to use them in the context of your class, adapting them to meet then needs of all individual learners

We have also moved towards self assessment and a whole class feedback approach instead of individual marking of books although this is still required at post-16 level. When reviewing learner work, your focus should be on understanding the misconceptions, identifying areas that need reteaching and then implementing tasks to help learners improve.

Flexible Days

School staff are often limited in their ability to make the most of opportunities to enjoy events or short breaks due to the inflexible nature of school holidays. At Harrow High, all staff are entitled to two flexible days paid holiday per year to allow for a long weekend away, a day at Wimbledon or even to spend a quiet day in the garden.

Transport

Whilst we are well located for public transport links including our proximity to the Bakerloo and Metropolitan lines as well as National Rail, we also have ample car parking on site for staff.

We are committed to improving our environmental impact and staff have access to Salary Sacrifice scheme which allows a proportion of income to be taken tax-free and used to pay for the purchase of a new bike. We are currently investigating extending this to a scheme for the leasing of electric cars. This can save hundreds of pounds per month although there are pension implications. For those who already have electric vehicles, we have six 7k/wh charging points at the school which are available at cost to staff.

Healthcare

All staff have the right to access our Westfield health programme which includes discounts on Eye Tests, glasses, dental work and up to 6 hours of counselling per year if it’s needed. A discounted rate on a more comprehensive private healthcare package is also available to all.

Childcare Vouchers

The school works with Computershare to provide the full available salary sacrifice childcare voucher programme to staff.

Commitment to safeguarding

Our organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment.

Our recruitment process follows the keeping children safe in education guidance.
