Head of Geography job summary
The Fulham Boys School is seeking an outstanding leader to monitor and maintain the high standard of education in the Geography department. This is an opportunity to lead a committed and enthusiastic department with a strong curriculum in place and to contribute to the development of existing teaching staff.
As Head of Department, you will have well developed leadership skills to build upon the department’s current achievements as well as having the ability to think outside the box to ensure students are eager to learn, have a love of Geography and are equipped to address the complex environmental, social and economic challenges facing tomorrow’s world. For example, in KS3, students get to grips with current geographical issues such as conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, coastal management in the Maldives and climate refugees in South Sudan.
The successful candidate will be an excellent classroom practitioner with a proven track record enthusing and engaging students. You will understand the importance of a well thought out curriculum, what core knowledge is needed and how to use interleaving and repetition to drive pupils’ outcomes. Experience of teaching Geography at both GCSE and A Level is essential for this role.
At FBS, every boy studies Geography from year 7 to 9, before making a choice whether to study Geography or History or both subjects at GCSE. A large percentage of students are choosing to study Geography at GCSE.
At present, we have a small yet strong cohort of students currently studying Geography A Level and in June 2022, our first ever cohort will sit their A Level exams. Encouragingly, as the Sixth Form has grown, entries for Geography A Level have risen significantly for the academic year that begins in September 2022.
We teach the OCR B specification at GCSE and the OCR specification at A Level, with 50% of our current Y13 cohort on track to study Geography at Russell Group universities, including our first successful applicant to Oxbridge.
The successful applicant will lead a team of individuals to ensure the success of boys’ outcomes as well as an extra-curricular Geography programme which enriches the lives of our boys and helps prepare them for university and beyond. For example, the department likes to offer students a wide range of opportunities beyond the school and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to further develop and put their stamp on a fieldwork programme that in the past year has included an A Level residential trip to the North Cornwall coast, urban fieldwork in Brick Lane and GCSE coastal fieldwork in Dorset.
As a school we are passionate about the professional development of all staff. Our commitment to the successful candidate is that we will do all we can to ensure that their professional development needs are met.
