Head of Law & Criminology job summary

Biddenham is an 11-19, oversubscribed school that, as we expand, is entering the next phase of its development. Due to our popularity, and as part of our £4.5 million building programme, we need to grow and strengthen our already high performing staff team who, by 2025, will be working with 1500 students.

To start in September 2024, we are looking to appoint an engaging Head of Law and Criminology to lead this ever popular A level subject.

Law and Criminology are taught as part of our Post 16 curriculum and are held with high regard across the school. The subjects have consistently high numbers of students every year, have an excellent track record of results and a significant proportion of students go on to study related subjects at university or as part of a degree level apprenticeship. We currently deliver OCR A Level Law and WJEC Criminology.

We aim to give students an understanding of legal methods, improve their powers of reasoning, develop analytical skills and solve problems by applying legal rules. The department does this by using both excellent classroom teaching and engagement beyond the classroom. The learning is enhanced by visits to Parliament, Central Law Courts (including the Supreme Court) as well as talks from our Alumni and mock trial competitions.

The successful candidate will join a school that is at the heart of the community it serves and has been making a transformative difference to the current and future lives of its students. The candidate will be expected to be an excellent classroom teacher and be able to demonstrate enthusiasm and passion for the subject. They will also be expected to demonstrate excellent leadership and organisational skills. You will join a wider dedicated team of teachers and staff at an exciting time of growth and expansion for the school. We are committed to providing access to technology for all by providing chromebooks to all of our students and staff and developing innovative blended learning approaches to teaching.

This opportunity is for a great teacher and form tutor who has strong interpersonal skills and a passion for making a difference to young peoples’ lives.

As a school we offer:

A diverse workplace,
Chromebooks for all classroom staff and students,
Exceptional professional development and career progression,
A supportive environment for ECTs allowing them to thrive,
Positive working relationships at all levels (with a healthy dose of humour!),
A supportive leadership team,
A genuine focus on staff wellbeing with an employee support resource,
Cycle to work scheme for all staff.

This is an opportunity to join a school at an exciting point in its history and be a key player in its future.
